Default No Sound From my Optical Drives!

Just like the title says... When I play DVD's, I don't get any sound from my optical drives. They're SATA, and there's no place to put an audio-to-sound card cable, so I don't really know what to do. They're ASUS QuieTrack burners. I can get more specific info if you'd like - just ask. Thanks in advance.

What program are you using to play the DVDs. .
    Cyberlink MediaShow? or PowerDvd?

Check the program options an attempt to enable the correct audio adapter. If you can't find the playback options I would recommend using another program such as Windows Media Player. "Here" is the updated Codec Pack.

If you prefer another program I would recommend this pack. "Here" is the Universal Codec Pack.
You may want to check and make sure the sound is enabled in the Bios.

You shouldn't need any sound cables, unless you are using speakers or headphones plugged into an audio port on the front of the drive.

Thanks guys. I have tried a variety of programs to run DVDs including DIVX, WMP, PowerDVD... None of them work. I'll try that Codec Pack and see if that helps. I'll post back in a few and let you know what happens!

Well, tried the Codec pack (first link) and no luck. Then I went into BIOS and I couldn't find anything that looked even remotely like settings or options for Audio from optical drives. What I did notice is that while the drives show up in BIOS as SATA drives (and they are), the driver info in the hardware manager shows them as SCSI drives. Could this be causing the problem? They read/write data and install/run programs just fine, I just can't get any DVD audio playback from them...

According to the Device Manager they are... ASUS DRW-1814BLT SCSI CDROM Device with a driver from Microsoft.

    Thoughts?

I've seen an option somewhere on the properties of an optical drive (in device mangler I think) to enable digital audio out. Check that it's actually enabled.

Do you have sound from anything else? Try downloading media player classic (free dvd playback) and see if you get sound from that. If so, it's definitely a codec issue.

Hot damn! I got sound from Media Player Classic! Ok, so now how do I go about fixing the codec issue with my other players?

Let me guess you. . rebooted?
You will have to find the correct codecs for the program manually.
    Google it.

I use Divx 6.8 Player, Windows Media Player 11 and Sometimes Nero Showtime.
If you have installed the Universal Codecs Pack. that shoud have done the trick.

I prefer the K-Lite Mega Codec pack. It has everything including the stuff you'll never use.

You know what? If you need a good media player just use VLC:

This program will play ANYTHING you put into it. If it doesn't then finding codecs is easy. It's tiny too!
