I think that "spin off" could also be referred to as death throes. Its apparent that what they are doing hasn't worked quite so well as of late. First the CTO bailed, followed by the CEO. There is definitely some problems within the company. Hopefully they can come up with a plan that will set them back on track. I am not sure that this is particularly the best way to do it, but I am hoping they do.

doesn't sound good to me. sounds like outsourcing... private labeling. not sure how much of that is already done in the computer world, but anytime a company looses control of quality (at least hands on direct contact), then things tend to go south quickly.

    Asset Smart?

They need to outsource ATI and get their company back on track.

Well even if AMD does die, then intel will get lazy and something new will come up. They will cut costs and outsource things, and they will reach plateau that they stay on until something new rises up and trumps them. Nvidia or intel making a computer on a chip, perhaps?

All I know is that they shouldn't take ATi down with them. Perhaps they could sell it to the stockholders and use the extra money to get the back on track?

By outsource, Ken, you mean "shoot in the head"? Current ATi stuff is competitively priced, but they can't seem to get any of their products stable until six months or so after release... and this isn't a new development. AMD started their slide when they bought ATi, and it might be in their best interest to sell it back off and concentrate on what they do best - value-for-money - rather than wandering off on various tangents. (Video card on a CPU? No thanks, buddy.)

Here's hoping they've got a suitable replacement for the Phenom in the mix here, as history has shown that AMD (or, at least, another CPU company) is necessary to keep Intel on their toes. If it weren't for AMD64, we may well still be using Netbursts.

(Well, I'd have a P3 Tualatin, but you get the idea.)

This is AMD's moment to shine especially with the FTC breathing down the neck of Intel

Sadly, AMD has been re-active rather than pro-active IMHO. I don't expect anything too great in the near future, although the 740g chipset has been ok for some el cheapo builds for non-gaming customers.
