update:
found out its got like a perspex clear front on it. i unscrewed it and this is what it looks like. I was thinking how would i be able to paint the back of it black so it shows black through and not silver.

My suggestion would be to mask the edges and face, and use good 'ole Krylon Fusion for plastic. That does mean that you have a shiny black rather than matte or textured, but it works.

Ok well went with the paper idea. Went well, simply marked it out with the plastic as template then used a stanley to cut out.Then just got a black perm marker to turn the white edges from the cutting black. Ended up looking nice and thanks for responses...
