Is this going to be some kind of new trend on here or something? Posting topics asking about why this or that is priced thusly? Especially from websites that aren't always known to be accurate. It seems kind of... pointless. Maybe thats just me I guess?
Anyways, its an older processor I believe. It seems like the older technology gets, the harder it is TO get, thus driving up the price. Well, pretty much anyways.
I couldn't even find a "FX" line of processors on newegg (and they are still selling Pentium 4's I believe) so I'm guessing if newegg doesn't have them, them most retail stores won't either except for maybe one or two. So if someone wants that processor they'll have to look to alternative means to buy it. In this case, eBay. Its kind of like a monopoly, and we all know what happens when someone(s) have a monopoly of something. The price usually rockets upwards toward the sky.
Thats all more or less my guess anyhow.

People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.
And remember, just because someone charges an amount for something, that doesn't necessarily mean it's worth that much.
Zephik - There have been several of these threads, I know, and as for pointless, I guess the point is to try to understand it. When I see something that makes no sense, and I know someone who may be able to explain it, I ask. And you are right, this processor is unavailable just about anywhere. I only found it because I was looking to replace the one I have.
Pointy - That is a very good point. This particular person has several of these for sale at that price, but he may have them for a long time.

FX series are like Intel EEs.
I moved it for ya.
I sold a new mobo I recieved a sa prize on ebay once...the board was 2 years discontinued. Apparently, it was a popular board with overclockers, despite being older tech. It sold for close to $400.
In a time of chimpanzees I was a monkey.
the FXes were really good overclockers. It's just like old DDR memory. Once it's discontinued, it becomes a limited something. Limited something's go up in price.
Coffee is love, coffee is life.
On a related note, the Athlon XP 3200+s were selling consistently for over $200 at one point, because they were the "last of the breed" - the fastest stock XP, and therefore the best upgrade option for a computer with no OCing options (which therefore couldn't use a mobile CPU to its fullest potential). On the other hand, those that could... well, I got a 2600+LV that ran at 3200+ speeds (.1v undervolted, even) with a decent cooler for fifty bucks.
This is all fueled by people who see that X is the fastest CPU for a given platform, and jump on it.
