Need memory help.

Just installed 8gb of ram. Had 4. The computer takes roughly 5 min to bootup ( from the previous 30 seconds ). The ram shows its working just fine in bios and in my computer properties.


Quad 6600 with intel MB ( dg33tl )
vista 64bit HP

Should i tweak the memory speeds? I am running a case where heat is no issue. Ill reboot right quick to see the defaulted settings.

Is the computer doing a mem test? If so, that could explain the slower boot time. If it boots successfully (just slowly) try turning off the memtest in the bios, and making sure it's also set to quick boot.

That might make a big difference for you. Does Windows recognize all the memory?

yeah windows and bios see it just fine. the slow part is when the vista loading slidebar comes up, that hangs out for about 3 min then slowely goes into windows.

it didnt like me changing stuff, had to cmos reset i didnt try to dumb it down to 667mhz though, kept it at 800mhz. reading some stuff in a google search of some issues.

If that was true we wouldn't have the option to use all the slots, hehe. That notion comes from doing stupid stuff to your RAM, like overvoltage above and beyond what it can handle. When you do that to 4 DIMMs and notice slowness, then remove two of the slots performance will usually increase a bit, leading people to think that 2>4.

For the OP, make sure your PSU is good enough. It may be something as silly as having it originally maxed out and the two new sticks pushed it over the edge.
