AFAIK, the only way to crossfire cards from different generations will be with the Hydra setup, which isnt even officially released yet.
Hydra looks so cool.. you can even "sli-fire" an Nvidia card and an ATI card together!

your 3870 is rated for dx10.1, not dx9, so you're all set

basically.. to crossfire cards.. without the new hydra system... the first 2 digits must be the same. 38xx works with any other 38xx same with 4850 workin with 4870 and 57xx
you can mix MSI with ATI with ASUS with any other brand... aslong as the first 2 digits r the same
