Default Phenom II X4 920 issue

I just replaced my motherboard in my computer and upgraded the CPU while I was at it. I now have a Phenom II X4 920 (2.8GHz quad core). Windows doesn't recognize what it is. It says "AMD Processor model unknown". In the device manager it shows up as 4 CPUs, but they all say the same thing. I tried reinstalling the driver but nothing changes.

Is there a driver I need to dl or something? I don't know what to do. Come to think of it, my old CPU (Athlon X2 6000+) wasn't right either windows saw it as an Opteron 940 IIRC, so I don't know waht it is.

I'm running XP Pro SP3. Motherboard in a Foxconn Destroyer.

    TIA!

No idea why; you shouldn't need any drivers. Maybe a BIOS update would help?

Check if CPUz gives you correct information, Windows is all over the place for detecting a CPU (I've had it think Celerons were P3s and vice versa among other things) so I wouldn't worry too much what Windows thinks.

There is a driver from AMD, installed and did nothing.
Updated the BIOS and still nothing.
CPU-Z gives me the correct info, Windows does give me the correct GHz, and the device manager shows up as 4 CPUs.
The BIOS also doesn't know what it is, it says the same thing windows says.

I am going to contact Foxconn and hope they can trouble shoot it, I'll update when I do.

@mtekk dude... Celerons r P3s... P2s... P4... u name it... celerons r the same exact thing with just a lower cache...

I'd prefer it if at least the BIOS would recognize it... It's not like this stuff is cheap.

Should have spent extra and gotten a Intel Core i7 920.

Providing the CPU is working, this is only a minor problem, but to me it sounds like a BIOS issue, not a windows issue, but I can't be too sure.

Generally this is a BIOS issue. If the machine doesn't show the correct processor model at startup (when it lists devices and shows the BIOS logo) then it's the BIOS; if it does, then it's a software problem.

My old Socket A machine detected CPUs by their clock speed as it was programmed to think "11x200 = XP 3200+", etc. So that's what it thought my unlocked 2600+ was. The same phenomenon (sorry) seems to be shown with your old CPU - it looked for another chip with the same L2 cache and clock speed and somehow found it - presumably the CPU identification chart was copied straight over from one K8 BIOS to another, regardless of socket.

Gee, it damn sure took me long enough to find and add the origin of the first quote...
