I go in and out of phases where I'm super paranoid and where I just get tired of the bs.

If downloading any 3rd party software/tools I go to www.virustotal.com Other than that, I just stay away from shady sites/porn/pirated bs/hack tools.

I'd rather be safe than sorry and have never had a problem with any viruses.

i use AVG 8 and Adaware if I have any problems. usually those two take care of it. Spybot helps too. My system generally stays clean but I have a lot of friends who like their porn. so I have to clean theirs up a lot. haha

    I Use:
    Zone Alarm firewall
    Avast Antivirus
    Spybot search and destroy.

    All freeware, all fantastic programs.
In my opinion, avast is the best antivirus software i have ever used, much better then the stuff you pay loads for every year.

Im not massively keen on zone alarm, but i switched to it when i had some serious issues with one of the releases of sygate personal firewall.
Been meaning to try out sygate again though and see if they have sorted it.

I installed the free versions of Avira Anti-Virus and Super Anti-Spyware and suddenly my rig starts acting up. It wouldn't go to sleep (instead the screen would just turn off) and when I tried shutting down it just sat at the shutting down screen with the little circle deal...

Just thought I'd throw that out there. Perhaps these apps do not like vistax64.

nope, sygate got bought out by norton, and is now part of there internet security suite, intergrated with there firewall, basicly its sygate with full of bloat and slowed down, with all the advanced features its used to offer removed.

Mary had a little lamb. It bumped into a pylon. Ten thousand volts went up its arse and turned its wool to nylon!
