    Default Dban - An Explanation

I see that there was a thread killed about this, so I thought I should explain to prevent any misunderstanding.

Dban (http://www.dban.org/) is a utility to securely destroy data on a hard drive. It actually meets RCMP (and I believe DoD) specs for secure data destruction on drives before disposal/resale.

It's not a hack or nuke program, despite the name.

I just thought I'd mention this to whoever killed the thread.

Ok, so you originally wanted to install this to a USB drive to run from there, right?

Mods, can you give me a green light to explain this? This could be used maliciously I suppose, but so could the CD..

I have no problem with it. I love using DBAN for wiping drives, and actually wouldn't mind a tut on putting it on a flash drive.

I learned about DBAN from this forum and I have used it ever since. It is easier to just use a CD or a floppy and let the machine you want to wipe boot off of the floppy or CD. It usually takes several hours to completely wipe the hard drives. Make sure you don't have anything you want to keep on those drives including the operating system, because everything will be gone.

Here it is.. according to this site, Dban can be installed to a floppy or USB device, so long as the computer you are wiping has USB booting capabilities. Check your BIOS for boot options to see if it can be done.

I've merged the two threads--a tutorial would be great, who wants to write one up?
