Default To all Seagate 7200.11 owners (especially 1TB owners)

    Just found out about this:
    http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/cr...p?DocId=207931

Welcome, Seagate hard drive owners. A number of Seagate hard drives from the following families may become inaccessible when the host system is powered on:[FONT=Arial,Verdana,sans-serif] Barracuda 7200.11
    DiamondMax 22
    Barracuda ES.2 SATA
Once a drive has become affected the data becomes inaccessible to users but the data is not deleted. Seagate has isolated this issue to a firmware bug affecting drives from these families manufactured in December 2008.
Please use the following tools and instructions to determine if you have one of the affected products. If your drive is affected, we recommend that you update the firmware on the disk drive to prevent this condition
I have 2 drives affected by this, and I'm waiting for the results for the last one to be validated.

Hmm, my new ST3500320AS is on the list, and the F/W is SD15, so it recommends upgrading it...

Just beware, you'll probably loose all data off the drive.

Are you really? Who knows if WD have a hidden bug yet to be discovered... what I'm trying to say is, this could have happened to any company, but I'm glad they have support for it.

Technically the data will be on the platters, just the drive won't be able to read it after upgrading the firmware (I'm not sure if this is 100% true, but this is what I remember from originally upgrading my 1TB drives), so remember to backup your data first before you upgrade.

    I don't think so, personally I wouldn't risk it.

    wouldn't risk updating?

is this update meant to be used WHEN/IF it becomes affected? like a treatment not a preventative?
