    Default Graphics card boot problem

I have a system with a ASUS Geforce 6600 256MB AGP graphics card in it. Every time I start the system up I have video without any problems what so ever. However, like clockwork, 7 seconds after the computer starts I lose video, no matter what screen it is at (boot sequence, post, bios). The computer continues to boot, I just lose video.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

    Thanks,
    Indybird

you mean signal to your monitor?
if yes.. try to remove your videocard. and try to connect your screen to the onboard videoslot..if you have any..and see if the same truble happens there..clean your asus card for dust and put it back in. and try boot..try also to reset bios it might help..

Ok so I tried another video card (as I don't have onboard), and it worked fine. The ASUS card has absolutely no dust on it, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't need cleaning. I have already tried resetting the BIOS, and it hasn't helped yet.

    Thanks for the reply +rep

7 seconds of video, then crash? weird.. is the heatsink making contact to the gpu?

I would definitely check the heatsink to make sure it's making full contact to the gpu... if you restart it immediately does it work for another 7 seconds, or still no video?

Maybe make sure the onboard is disabled? Sounds stupid but aren't they always?

XP-- Right click> properties> Display settings
Vista-- Right click> Personalize> Display settings

There's a drop down that should show both cards. Select your default then look around in Advanced settings.

I tried reseating the heatsink, and applying new thermal paste but I had the exact same problem. If I restart immediately it gives me video for another 7 seconds.

This motherboard doesn't have onboard video, but when I put other graphics cards in it works just fine. I tried putting a (working) PCI graphics card in at the same time as this one, but windows kept freezing.

That's just weird.. well, if another card works, then it's almost certainly the gpu. I guess you could try it in another PC to be 100% certain, but that doesnt exactly help resolve the issue.

Do you have a local pc store you could maybe get a cheapy AGP card to verify if its the slot or the card that is bad assuming when you say graphics card was tried, you only had pci cards (post eight).
