Did you try to install the newest drivers you can find on the internet? (or just the ones from a driver-cd)

If you didn't -> try that
If you did -> maybe contact product support or something

(sorry if this was a useless post...)

Is the OS detecting the LAN device? Is the loopback device working?

Ok, so in the device manager, there's nothing under 'Network adapters'? Is there anything under 'Other devices' that it doesn't have a driver for? If so, that's likely your problem...wrong driver.

The loopback device (127.0.0.1) is the virtual network interface built into all OSs, that in this case you can use to make sure it's not a problem with the networking stack. For example, if you try to ping 127.0.0.1, and don't get a response, then something is seriously wrong. Likely, a core networking service wouldn't be starting..or something, idk..tbh I've never known that to happen, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Maybe it just wasnt seated well before? A scratch on the board could break a trace, which *could* cause a random failure.

Glad it's working! Make sure you get the latest BIOS in there too.. I find that most Asus boards ship at least one revision behind.

could have been a windows miss-install,

i've had a few of them, other month i insalled XP x64 and the sound card refused to install, re-installed windows XP x64 and now it works
