    Default CD drive showing up with yellow !

    I did a free install on my gfs friend's laptop. Installed all the drivers from sony and all that jazz and returned the laptop to her without checking device manager to make sure everything was good.

    Well... the second she got it she went to put a dvd in and it wouldn't run the disk.

    I now have the laptop back and yep, the correct drivers for the cd drive are installed. I tried uninstalling the drivers and pulling out the drive and putting it back in so it would auto install the device but that didn't work either.

    Auto updating says the best driver software is already installed yet still a "yellow !"

    Any ideas?

    EDIT: Apparently this is a common problem. Easy registry fix by deleting upper/lower filters and a restart.

    I was just going to suggest removing the upper/lower filters.

    Warning; Registry editing is dangerous for noobs, and even sometimes for veterans. I know you arent a noob TGS, but I'm sure some will read this.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    The first value on the right should be "DVD/CD-ROM Drives".

    Delete the upper and lower filter keys, and reboot. The keys will be automatically recreated on the next reboot if needed.

    This fix usually only works when the device is present in the device manager, but not in the drive manager or in my computer. (or visible in explorer)
