Thread: Looking To Upgrade

    Default Looking To Upgrade

I was wondering what would be the best upgrade to get. I am looking at either Getting another 6600 gt and use SLI or wait and save up for a 7800 gt.

    Thanks in advance

there more than two options here. it all depends on how patient you are, and how deep your pockets are.

firstly, if you are ONLY looking at those two options, i would suggest the 7800 because its a generation newer than the 6600. there are various advantages to the 7 series.

secondly, if you are looking for really good performance at a good price, you might want to entertain an x1800xt. the x1800xt seems to have a habit of edging out the 7800 gt easily, and even the 7800gtx is bested in many situations.

thirdly, if you want to go for no-holds-barred performance, i suggest the x1900. its basically the same case as the x1800 beating the 7800, except now the x1900 is narrowly beating the 7900.

fourthly, and lastly, if you can keep your pants on until june, you will be rewarded with the geforce 8 series. i dont know what that stuff will be like, but based on the wild rumours we should be seeing some interesting stuff.

unfortunately, any way you look at it, you're going to be buying something that will be old news pretty soon after. for the sake of the extra performance and longer lead, i would wait until the geforce 8 series. if you need something now though, ATI is your best bet for the higher performance range.

7900 series just came out, wait like a month, and you will see a drop in 7800gt prices, as it is right now, the 7800gt is the same price as the 7900gt. Just wait a wee bit, or like said above, wait for the 8 series.

Yea, it always works that way. I remember paying 250.00 for a 32MB TNT2 Ultra card back in the day. Now that was a powerhouse:p

Also though, if you are considering waiting for the 8 series, you should realise that the price tag on them is likely to be quite steep especialy in the first few months of release.

So wait till fall of this year for the new cards.
The X1800 whatever cards you were talking about are Radeon Cards right. If so do I need a special mobo for the crossfire or can i use my SLI board Interchangably?
    thanks for the quick replies.

Tom's Hardware posted a nice review last Thursday.

The 7900GTX is the high end card. 7900 GTX, 7900GT and the 7600GT use a 90nm die so they are cooler. I imediately looked and found pricing under $600.00 US (too rich for my blood).

Personaly I like to buy just behind "bleeding edge" tech. That way you have lower prices, more stable drivers and more choices.
