    Default Sweet custom NAS.

I ran across this on Hack a Day. It's a really well done little 16TB NAS (ok, 12.7TB with the RAID5 config it's in), using a small ECX Atom board and RocketRAID controller.

    That is awesome.
People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.

I saw this too, the guy has his own site with some very cool mods. Someone should track him down and invite him to our community, I think we have much to learn from him. Can probably talk our editor into pimping his stuff front page, who knows?

yeah I've seen that one before too. Pretty awesome. Except you just *know* that someday a chip the size of a dime will hold 3 times as much data as that HD rack LOL

I talked to our editor earlier tonight. He was blabbering about shrubberies.

    What a strange person...

The first 1.5TB stored on it was video of its own construction...trippy, man.

88MB/s write? That's terrible...assuming it can maintain that, it would take 42 hours to fill the array. And where did the Vertex SSD go in there? It was listed in the parts, but not in the log. Very cool finished project though!

I wanted to do something like this, though not as extreme as 16TB. I no longer have the need for it unfortunately.
    I'll procrastinate tomorrow.

Actually it's not. It's probably pretty close to what each one of those drives would do if you hooked it up directly with SATA. It's a pretty average write speed for HDDs.

I mean it's terrible in regard to the total size of the array. The ratio of write speed to total size of the array is WAY off balance here.

While not specifically mentioned in the log if you look at the construction photos it is on the backside/underside of the diagonal panel behind the HDD's.

He doesn't mention putting them in, but he does talk about them at the point that he makes the mount.

Here's the Vertex and the Scorpio Black mounted:
