i have been dying to use ubuntu. but i still need my windows 7 for games and such. im having the issue where ubuntu takes control of the boot loader. i tried using the terminal to make 7 the default os but i get into the file and nothing is there.

Yeah, with 10.04, Ubuntu switched to GRUB 2 which unfortunately is not as simple to configure as GRUB, but is supposed to offer more flexibility or something. They recommend using a new application called 'StartUp-Manager' to configure it instead of modifying system files. It's not installed by default, but it is in the default repositories, so you'll just have to run 'apt-get install startupmanager', and then once it's done installing it'll be available in your 'System->Administration' menu.

Here's some more detailed reading if you're interested:

If your just going to try it out and you still need Win7, there is always Wubi

    http://wubi-installer.org/

I tried it out a while back and it worked great for me.

It used to be included on the Ubuntu install CD, but I am not sure if it is still there. Just pop it into your drive open up Windows Explorer and run. It does the rest for you.
