Wow, that is quite impressive. Re the concerns in the HaD article, it looks like one of the computers is the controller while the other is a firewall or something (2 NICs, 1 HDD). I would completely believe the noise level claims. I have several of the 1.5TB version of those drives, and I before I loaded them into the 'temporary' case (with drivesleds, each of which has a tiny, noisy fan), with 2 of them and 3 1.5TB Samsung F2 drives running, the PSU fan was louder than the rest of the entire system. Also, I have 8 of the fans that he is using, and even at 12V they're whisper quite.

As for capacity, I'm not sure. He says that 'most' of them are 2TB WD Green drives, so I can't guess an exact number, but if all of them were 2TB, there are 64 drives, so that would be 128TB raw. He says he "from time to time [...] experiment[s] with RAID 50", which I read to mean that he's only ever using half of the array. So, really, idk what the actual size of his array is, but suffice to say..it's massive.

Idk, it's just a wooden box with some hard drives tossed into it. Looks poorly constructed, at least from the perspective of a modding forum where mods are built over months and it shows. This looks like something one of us would toss together in an afternoon after downing a 12-pack.

If I were to spend that much on hard drives I would at the least spend a little bit on a pair of Norco 4220's and some SAS expanders, or something similar.

I found the wire soldiers far cooler / more impressive.
