I have to agree, part of it is just never being able to be finished. I haven't ever really done much in the way of extensive modding but little tweaks to make something work better, a bit of personalization, etc.
Mostly - its just fun

It's all about elegance for me. Get rid of that which isn't needed, and insert that which performs a useful function. Oh, and noise - I love a silent PC
