CD jewel case ought to be the same exact plastic as the ipod case so i might try it on some of that.

OK, better late than never? Lowes sells a spray paint primer specifically for plastic. I think they have a few colors, plus clear.
Once you primer it with that, you can use any of your favorite paints.
I've used it, with pretty decent results.
Scuff it up with some 400 grit sandpaper or a red scotch brite first. Then, wash it with normal liquid dish soap and warm water. Rinse, dry with a lint free cloth. This will get rid of any leftover oils from your hands so it doesn't contaminate the paint. For rattlecans, krylon fusion is good for plastic. It's basically just spraypaint with adhesion promoter built in, but it sprays well, and lays out nice and flat too.
I actually lost the ipod case ;_; I bought a new one at the store the other day, and meant to tuck the old one aside until i found some free time to paint it. But now I have no clue were I put it...
