    Paint?

The head(s), compressed air (be it canned or pumped at home), cleaning fluids.
(don't know a whole lot myself.)

I saw something about a regulator and filter. Not sure what I need.

Regulator to keep the pressure constant. Wouldn't want a sudden surge of air ruining your work.

Filter, I think, to keep the paint from backing up into the air hose when working/done.

    Comes with the regulator

I don't use a water trap (filter) and havn't had a problem yet. just open the drain valve every couple hours and the condensation comes out.
