Don't overlook snowmobile engines. I have a neighbor who built his go kart around a 440 snowmobile racing engine and that sucker flies.

After you get past the initial investment, a MIG, or arc is a handy tool to have around, and can pay for itself if you want to make offer services for small things. The hardest part is learning how to weld properly. No booger welds, or pretty welds that are cold, and have no depth to them... Plenty of books, and places like Pirate with amazing info on the subject though.
My old advice s if you go MIG, get shielding gas. flux core does nothing by make a mess...
Or learn to weld with a O/A torch.
But pricey. Those super compact 2-strokes are nuts, though!
