I used to use ProEngineer, for which I had a student licence.. It is a very nice program if you know how to work with it, but it is sooo difficult to do only small things. So now I use SolidWorks, which is at least AS powerfull as ProEngineer, BUT the programmers of SolidWorks also thought about the user interface!!! it realy works well, the program just understands what you want to do.
I would recommend solidworks, though I don't know how expensive it is...
i like google sketchup
and bryce isnt bad if you've got the time.
Blender all the way for me. It's opensource. And it has a unique interface so it requires quite a long learning process...
Though some things I don't like about it (no hard/soft edge support) (yet).
I tried to learn XSI|Mod Tool once but I haven't got really far.
