Hey
Has anyone ever made HDD quieteners (I know you cant 'silence' them)
I'm thinking of making a home made metal box w/rubber silencers, copper heatsyncs or soemthign not sure what, but i'd really like to see others' projects on them

I use grommets and a copper plate from the hardware store.
I drilled out the mounting holes in the chassis, bent it a little bit and mounted the drives using longer screws and a washer on the outside. I mounted the copper plate to the bottom of the drive to suck away some of the heat (I found out later that it worked better to drill some holes in the copper). I also used some sound deadener on the inside of the cage. It was a little better. Took away the annoying whine.
Yep I have.... The homebrew hammond box enclosure.
And if you start with a moderately quiet HD in the first place this method is practically silent. The idea origionally came from a poster named alleycat at SPCR. You use an alu hammond box (used for electronic projects etc) and some gel packs. It might look like it will cook the drive, but it doesn't. in fact the drive only gets slightly warmer over a non silenced drive. This method has been tested against the popuar silencers and beats them all for silence, at a fraction of the cost.

If you look towards the bottom of the page on my worklog I have a short sequence of piccies that show how to do it.
