7900gs, 7900gt, 7900gtx, 7950gt

With video card companys making so many varients it's hard to choose which one to get. I know that the 7900GTX is the fastest (appart form the 7950 GX2) but what is the real difference between the 7900GS,GT and the 7950GT?
The 7900GS can overclock and even beat some GT's at stock but I havn't heard anything about the 7950GT and its capabilities yet. I can get a 7950GT that is cheeper than a 7900GT and clocks higher but what is the real difference between them.

Both these cards being fairly cheep for me. The 7900GS is $333.00 AUS and the 7900GT being $423.00 AUS.

Ok so the

7900gs
7900gt
7900gtx

are all in the same family I have ranked them power wise

while the 7950gt is the little brother of the 7950GX2 a different family

The 7950gt fits into the order like this

7900gs
7900gt
* 7950gt *
7900gtx

I would suggest going for a 7950gt.

i think theyre almost considering that 7950 "series" as the net genration, at least ive read it put that way on several reliable, high traffic sites. either way. you should really look at how many pipelines, vertex shaders, and expecially the interface for memory, i think 512 is highest so far, they prolly have a 1ghz, who knows, 256 is good for mine as of right now. im on a 6600gt right now, runs stuff ok. i seriously considering these directX 10 cards. look on the fron page on HardOCP.com and they talk to some guy at microsoft about it or somethng, sounds like the raw truth about its performance enhancmets, pixel shader 4.0 (whatever its called) and theyre even introducing new processes to the rendering "chain." im already impressed, and we dont even have vista yet. i myself am waiting for DX10, but if you must go now, 7950 with the most of everything, pipelines and memory interface,not just capacity, are the biggies after raw mhz. i hope this helps.

I can get a 512mb version of the 7950GT for about $50.00 AUS more and it has less memory and core speeds but the reviews i've read says it overclocks like hell. I will probably be upgrading this time next year cos i don't have any cash but I was going to wate for DX10, just checking my options.

My tip struggle with what you have save up and get DX10 card. It's really come to that point where you are better off waiting. As DX10 wont be surpassed in a while. The new G80 core is just around the corner.

I think the 7900 GTO is the best "bang for you buck" currently because it's the exactly the same as a 7900 GTX except it has slightly slower memory.
Both cards have 512 MB RAM and have the same GPU.

A 7900 GTO is ~250 while a 7900 GTX is ~500

BTW, both are double-slot cards and they are silent according to reviews.

I would say the X1900GT are very tasty as well for their price. Plus they can be softmodded and overclock to become a X1900XT apprently.

Thanks, I'm gonna stay with NVIDIA for now cos all the ATI cards i have had in the pased blew on me. Both of the cards I was looking at are duel slot. I dont mind about space cos my case is fairly big so that shouldnt be a problem.

I found this card MSI GF 7900GTO 512MB it's got slower specs but if its from the same batch as the GTX so its gotta be faster then the rest right? Clocks at 650/1320MHz and costs me $540.00 AUS. MSI don't have it on their site yet but a pc place close 2 me have em.
