    Default Heat Sink

Anyone have or know what the best heat sink is for a AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    Socket 939.

    Thnx

i usually hear good things about zalman and coolermaster, as far as cooling goes.
"best" is going to depend on if you're overclocking or not, what sort of airflow your computer has, and such like that. if you're just running stock, there's generally nothing wrong with using the AMD-supplied cooling stuff (assuming, of course, that you're buying boxed and not OEM...)
then, of course, there's the water cooling camp. i know nothing about that though, adn you didn't actually ask about that, so i'll ignore it

    Thnx for the Info AJ

Simon, thnx that not only suits the processor but it's also optimized for Nvidia Nforce which is also the chipset on my board.

i would go for a nice max-no-of-heat-pipescooler... my opinion of course... and arrange the airflow... i like the scythe series... ninja+is nice and the all-copper version is even nicer.. of course, zalman is really cool (pun intended), especially the 9700

No heatsink can be actually optimized it is just marketing stuff. Like there are even heatsinks which are windows vista ready.

i'm sure there are ways to "optimize" a heatsink

better surface area or better metal for conducting heat :p
or contact area designed for a specific chip (for instance you might not want to use a heatsink designed/optimized for an AM2 on your intel northbridge )

but yeah, "optimize" in a marketing sense is just that. marketing. "spend more money for same thing with a nifty sticker on the box"

(optimizing) refers to having the same conducting area as the top of the chip. otherwise to optimise it yourself there is something called lapping your heatsink. basically mirror polishing it.

but why bother with that. Chuck Norris doesnt use heatsinks, why should you?

i dunno about you, but i got plenty of heatsinks that are NOT vista ready. these things could barely cool system ram. lol. then again, they were designed for....actually, i dont know what theyre for, they suck horribly. theres like 7 fins on the unit, its 2 inches wide.
