They may be able to take a deposition and you will not have to show up in court. Most of the time it never makes it to court, since the offending party usually wants to avoid the extra time and cost involved and usually pay up when the cops knock on their door. I would definitely call the cops anyway, they may even have a high tech crimes unit and will contact paypal for any info they need.
