    Default DC's Sempron box

Greetings all! Not many threads here, so i figured i'd start my own

Anyways, here's my current system and first custom computer mod. Yes it's another ammo box case, but hey, i didn't know there were so many ammo boxes out there when i started this thing Its main purpose in time will be a media machine. play DVDs, listen to CDs, watch TV, etc (too bad i have no money right now to make it anything more than just an internet machine)

Specs are as follows (for now):
    AMD Sempron 1.58Ghz OC @ 1.71Ghz
    512 DDR PC2700 Kingston RAM
    20gig, 4200RPM HDD
    laptop DVD/CD+RW
onboard VGA & audio (upgrading to FX5200 & Creative 7.1)
    Slackware 10.1 Linux

just so you know now, NO that's not the display that normally is with it. These are the only pictures i currently have of it and i was using that one just to test it out.

Again this is my first mod ever, and i just made everything up as i went, tell me what you think.

Very Nice. The only thing I have to say really is that you need a bit of wire managment. Other than that it is a very nice mod. The window looks well built and the fan looks very nice. Are there any DVD/CD drives on this computer? I didn't notice them on your list or on the computer. How do you install software otherwise? [EDIT: Since that time I have noticed that there is a DVD/CDRW] Also do you ever close the door or do you only close it when you are transporting the computer? All in all, very nice.

thanks for the compliments. yea i know the wire mess is pretty bad in there (it actually looks even worse now) once this semester is over and i start working over the summer i'll have enough money/time to buy some cable sleeving and make it look nice

as far as the DVD player, it's buried in the list of the specs. it's an HP DVD/CD+RW. all the software that i use comes with my Linux distro. i've used most of it for a few years now and it works pretty well (XINE for DVDs, XMMS for OGGs & MP3s, etc.)

and lasty, the door unfortunately has to stay open while it's on, i never cut a hole in it so i could plug everything in that way. I did that so that I could transport the thing around easier without worrying that things would get banged up.

good work man, I dig the lighting. that lighted cable is real neat.

oh hey i just realized i read your question wrong jonopaul01. originally actually it didn't have a CD drive in it (i had no money at the time) all i did was just copy everything over a network. both me and my dad are computer geeks so we have a few laying around the house on the network that we used

thanks for the compliments man. as far as getting started, have a cool idea to build a computer in, and find the parts. as far as tools, usually a drill and a saw are pretty important because you never know what you're going to have to cut off, and a soldering iron can be helpful as well.

i know that it's not much help, but that's basically it. get an idea, and figure out how you'll make it. good luck!

by the way, i like your quote in your signature from John Carmack (Doom creator) i vaugely remember hearing that once
