Default What is wrong with my power supply??

Okay, so i have 2 old power supplys. Neither of which i really care about, but would like to do something with one of em.

Just to make it clear, it does NOT matter what i'm doing with it. I tried this on another power supply internally, and gave up from feedback from members saying that i shorted it in some way (FYI, i didn't)

So now i'm trying with this one. BUT i'm having the same problem. I need your guy's help, i'm stumped.

I'm trying to hotwire the power supply so that it works WITHOUT a motherboard (OR computer in any way)

Here's what i did, EXACTLY step by step:

1.) Plugged in the power supply

2.) Linked a wire from green on the ATX to ground on the ATX

3.) Turned on the power supply, it's active

4.) Took a pair of scissors and cut off the atx connector right at the connector.

5.) Took the green and ATX ground wire (now NOT attatched to the connector) and attached them together.

6.) Power supply turns on for a second, then turns off and remains off.

In order to get the supply working again, you have to detach and then reattach the green and ground wires.

Does anyone have ANY idea what's going on?

Sounds like the power supply is shorting make sure none of the other wires are touching each other tape each one individually so they don't touch each other then join the two wires you have been using.

BTW: You need to be careful when messing around with Power Supplies as electric shocks can cause injury or death so if you aren't 100% sure about you are doing then don't do it.

    absolutely everything i did yeah.

I cut off the ATX mobo plug, and then stripped the PSU_On wire (green) and one of the ground wires (black) and attached them.

That's it, and it doesn't work

Did you permanently cross the green wire with the ground? If so, the reason it's shutting off is the power button is a momentary switch meaning it only completes the circuit while you have the button pushed in. It is designed to shut of the PSU when the power button is depressed for more than 5 seconds. So when you turn on your PSU, it is like pushing and holding down the power button until it shuts the PSU back down.

    yes they're perm connected.

But then why did it stay on when it was perm. connected to the ATX?
