The only reason those things ever come out is to boost older movies sales. Honestly, who ever picks these movies, does not even look at ticket sales. It does not take an economist to tell us that is a movie sells more tickets than another movie, well that would qualify it for being a better movie in the publics eyes. We all know what Titanic did which most likely deserves to be at the top of the list. When Citzen Kane came out, a large amount of our country was in war. It can be a very biased opinion.

I think Papillon, and Escape from Alcatraz should have made the List.

Wow, I've seen a good chunk of that list. A lot of the older movies are amazing, classic stories that never grow old.

These movies were picked based on their artistic merit and outstanding contribution to to that art by American filmmakers, and not on ticket sales. The top 100 are picked by scholars and historians who do not care about "boosting older movie sales". These movies represent the very best we have offered so far.

"Titanic" was indeed a money making movie, but artisticly it has no right to even smell the feet of any movie near the top. If Economists where to rate movies instead of film scholars, what a sad thing that would be.

I agree Crimson. What is funny, is that I have seen most of the OLD movies on that list, but few of the new ones (by new I mean after 1980).

(although I feel #36 should have been higher on the list...)

AFI is a bit reserved about putting newer films on their top 100 because pop culture shifts. This is more meant for epic films or movies that are timeless & tap into Americana with perspective that is unique.

Resident evil? WTF?

I've spent a good chunk of my life watching movies and I've seen most of these. There are some amazing films here. Specifically: 4, 8, 15, 17, 23, 25, 30, 31, 33, 38, 39, 47, 52, 54, 55, 62, 68, 70, 71, 72(Greatest prison story ever), 86, 87, 94, 95, & 97.

The one I could think of that should be on the list instead of Titanic is Deliverance. That film has dug so far into the American psyche, it deserves a place on this list. What else do you think of when you hear dueling banjos? Alright then, point made.

I'm very disappointed that Shawshank is number 72. I have to put that at number one on my list. Followed by Citizen Kane.
