It looks as if he is going to make the keyboard backlit? Perhaps he/she could use www.freetranslation.com to attempt some sort of communication? Just an idea...

Ha! I was right about casting the letters.
My next guess is that the cutouts in the sides are for LEDs.
And the spacebar will be illuminated by that book lamp we saw earlier.
