Just a few years ago water cooling your PC was a dangerous and very expensive undertaking for the average PC enthusiasts. It required a lot of part sourcing, and modifications to components that were never meant to cool a PC. Today there exist more than a few ready-made kits from a number of manufacturers. In the early days these kits gained a reputation for being of poor quality, having low efficiency, and were prone to fail. Fast forward to 2010 and things have made a major turnaround. Ok, we like different. That's why we're here. We like things that are not like what the neighbors have. Most of us make the things we have different on our own, that's what modding is, but sometimes we just want to be able to buy something off the shelf that's a little off the norm. Tomorrow TBCS Staff Journalist Trace will attempt to break the record overclock on a Intel i7 980X using an air cooler. To the best of our knowledge Trace will have to hit at least 5.1 GHz (if this number is now higher please PM me a link) and prove that it is stable. To do this Noctua has kindly provided their NH-D14 CPU cooler for this attempt. We chose this cooler because it showed amazing potential by breaking the 5.3GHz barrier on a Intel i5 655K earlier this year. Trace will be broadcasting the full attempt live on Ustream tomorrow. The actual time the attempt will be taking place is still under discussion and we will notify everyone once we have a time set in stone. Keep an eye on this thread for updates and more information on the system he will be using.
