News Desk: Another Microsoft / Apple conflict?
By slaveofconvention at 2009-10-31 20:11

Despite the dire title, no this isn't another case of one of these two computer big-boys shouting things about the other. Details are emerging relating to what could be a major problem between what may be considered the two companies flagship products. The products being the Apple iPhone, and the brand new Windows 7. That's not the end of the list of combatants though as the problem only happens when you combine the two with Intel's new P55 chipset... Read the full story here.

There have been numous reports of an issue which occurs when trying to synchronise an iPhone with iTunes installed on a Windows 7 X64 PC built around Intel's new P55 chipset. Sometimes the phone will appear to connect but fail to synchronise, other times it just freezes altogether. While the vast majority of problems have been reported specifically with the 64 bit version of Windows 7, The Register also has a record of a similar claim by a user running the 32 bit version.

Some users have reported success with all three of the above in use, when also using a PCI expansion card USB port - these cards have thier own USB controller, so neatly sidesteps the USB controller on the P55 chipset, while others have reported blue screens even with the PCI cards.

As the issue seems to be limited to this unique trifecta, hopefully a driver update will solve the problem in the near future, but as things stand, no-one is accepting the problem is with thier gear - yet, so the solution may come in the form of an updated chipset driver, a Windows patch, or an iTunes revision - we'll just have to wait and see....
