Review: Enermax Revolution85+ 1050W PSU
By Datech at 2009-12-18 15:15

Processor-check. RAM-check. Hard drive-double check. Motherboard-check. One more step before you have a working computer- get a power supply. Power supply values and usage will be debated until the end of time, and in the end most people just buy the biggest PSU they can afford. ENERMAX's Revolution85+ 1050W PSU offers 85% efficiency and over 1KW in power, but is it the missing link in your BYOPC? Read on to find out.<!--break-->

Introduction

Xeons, Phenoms, and SLI, oh my! With the march of technology comes the gradual increase of power requirements. For every next generation CPU that runs on slightly less power, there is a next generation GPU that runs on that much more power. For every double capacity HDD, there is another useful 5.25" drive bay addition with a Molex connector. As power supplies age they lose their output gradually, some more so than others, and initial build quality is always a telltale sign of performance two or three years down the road.

In three years your computer might require 100-200 more watts than now, but your PSU might produce 200-300 less watts than new. It is always nice to be prepared, but getting the best bang for the buck is great too. Is the ENERMAX Revolution85+ 1050W PSU what your next-gen gaming rig needs, or will you be shunting it to the back of the server room in two years time?

Features and Specifications

ENERMAX's product website for the Revolution85+ 1050W PSU is enormous and covers everything from product information to specifications, cables and connectors to a video of the PSU powering a 3-way SLI system. Here is a brief snapshot of the features:

Quote:
  • 85PLUS ready, the world's first modular cable PSU with 85-91% efficiency
  • nVidia SLI certified
  • FUTURE CPU ready, ready for most upcoming CPU generations by 12P sockets for possible connector changes
  • FUTURE GPU ready, through six massive 12V rails for perfect load distribution
  • AHD^2 Topology, industry leading "Asymmetric Hybrid DC-to-DC" topology
  • 24/7 @ 50 degrees C ready
  • HeatGuard, keeping PSU fan running for 30-60 seconds after shut down to dissipate the remaining system heat
  • PowerGuear, PSU status monitor with 4-mode LED
  • SafeGuard, industry leading octuple protection circuitry
  • AirGuard, patented air-inlet with optimal aero-dynamical design reducing noisy air turbulences
  • SILENT read, with an ultra-quiet 135mm fan with intelligent RPM control
  • 99% 12V Power, world's first EPS12V PSU with 99% 12V output capability
  • SERVER ready, SSI PSDG 2009 and SSI PSDG 2008 1.0 support, and more
  • DXX ready, for next-gen graphics cards with 8P PCI-E connectors
  • EMC ready, full scale electromagnetic filtering
The specifications sheet is much smaller than the features list, but the values are tangible and reassuring. Many a consumer will be happy to see that the peak power is much higher than the billed power.
