Differences in Airbrushing and Spray Painting

Unlike spraypaint, airbrush paint must be mixed first before being sprayed. Also, airbrushes must be hooked up to a compressor, air tank, propellant, or air source in order for paint to flow. This means that airflow must be controlled and regulated. Airbrushes come in many sizes and shapes, and come with a variety of needle sizes, effects caps, and gun styles. These elements add a higher level of complexity to the use of an airbrush, but also add many more capabilities over a can of spray paint.

Airbrushing also allows for more complex color mixtures than one could typically find available from spraypaints. In addition, an airbrush provides much more intricate control and finer lines and pressures than a can of spraypaint. This is critical for achieving a myriad of complex effects. Typically it is a preferred method for detailed paint jobs such as murals and fine finish work.
