[edit] Dremel

The Dremel is probably the most popular tool used in modding for its amazing versatility. Simply, if you can only afford one tool in your shop, make it a Dremel. They can cut just about anything, but also sand, grind, polish, strip, and just about anything else you can imagine. While many companies now make high speed rotary tool, Dremel is still the preferred company. If you do decide to go with the Dremel make, then it is recommended that you buy a chuck as well. This will allow you to use other companies attachments which will be cheaper than the Dremel brand. One of the pluses of choosing the Dremel brand is that they offer attachments, not just cutting wheels and sanding tools, but attachments to transform it into a jigsaw, small circular saw, and even a drill press.

[edit] Attachments

Cut-Off Disk

The standard Cut-Off Disk is a 3/4 inch disk of ceramic. This is often used in places where the larger Reinforced Cut-Off Disk would be unable to provide a detailed enough cut. The smaller size allows the Standard Cut-off disk to make smaller radius cuts without damaging the surrounding material.

Reinforced Cut-Off Disk

The Reinforced Cut-Off Disk is slightly larger than the Standard Cut-Off disk. This is the preferred attachment for cutting large windows because it lasts longer than Standard Cut-Off disk, allowing you to work longer without changing disks.

Copper Carbide Shaping Disk

The Copper Carbide shaping disk is a disk made of copper carbide best used for shaping and cutting acrylic sheets. However the Copper Carbide disk does not create clean cuts. It is very good for making rough cuts. Once you make your rough cuts with a Carbide Disk, it is a good idea to go back and smooth it over with a sanding disk or sandpaper.

Aluminium Oxide Grinding Stones aka "The Brownish Ones"

The Aluminium Oxide Grinding Stone is designed to grind metals such as stainless steel, as well as nearly all other metals. These make great multi-purpose grinding stones for modders. They also work well on rivets, welded joints and rust.

Silicon Carbide Grinding Stones aka "The Blueish Ones" Silicon Carbide grinding stones are designed to give a hobbyist the ability to easily etch glass, stone, ceramics, and non-ferrous metals. They are the perfect tool for deburring rough cuts, and grinding tougher materials such as gemstones.

Tile Cutting Bit

A tile cutting bit is a 2 cm long shaft with very small teeth on all sides, even the top. It may seem useless in modding, but is quiet handy when carving or shape various materials, such as Filler Putty and Polystyrene.

Chuck and Collets

A chuck is the small "tip" of the Dremel. The Collet is the 3 pronged device that, when squeezed by the chuck presses against an attachment and holds the attachment in place while you work.
