[edit] Earplugs

One of the basic necessities when using any power tool, earplugs are designed to help protect your hearing from damaging amounts of noise. Earplugs come in two basic varities, work and impact. Impact earplugs are the kind used at firearm ranges and by rivet workers. These work best against sudden, very loud noises and do little against a constant background noise. The other type of earplug is designed to help protect against constant moderately loud noises and are commonly used in factories and most work enviroments.

Earplugs can be disposable or renewable, with some cleaning. If you're working in a shop with earplugs in, don't remove them in the middle of your work, wait until you are finished. When you take earplugs out and put them back in repeatedly, you're exposing your ear to a lot of bacteria and a possibility of whatever dust particles you have floating around. A good rule of thumb is put them before you start work and take them out when you're done. Throw them away or clean them. Do not reuse disposable earplugs.

Invest a little cash into your earplugs and they won't let you down for years to come. It's cheaper than a hearing aid, and easier to use too.
