Engraving and Etching
Sometimes the easiest way to add a personal touch to a project is to add a graphic. Whether it's your name, a design, or even just something abstract, etching and engraving can be easy and fun ways to add some flair to your project.
The most important step here is to PLAN. Have your design chosen and finalized, and test it first on some scrap material. Wouldn't you hate to slip with that dremel, and put a huge gouge on your project?
Etching/engraving acrylic is probably the easiest. Print your design out mirrored (backwards), and position it how you want. Tape it into place (the more secure the better) to make sure it doesn't move around on you. Now, just take a few minutes to look at it. Make sure it's exactly where/how/size/orientation you want, because once you start etching, it's permanent.
If you are etching your design into a piece of metal, there are a couple options. First, print the design out, cut out the details, and tape it onto the surface. Then just follow the lines. If you are going for something more abstract/freehand, it's still a good idea to mask the whole surface with tape, then sketch out a rough design. If you dont mask it off, you can once again end up with nasty gouges and scrapes when you "oops". And you will.. everyone does.
If you do mess up, stay calm. Try to incorporate the error into your design. Chances are that people wont ever notice it.
Tools:
Most people prefer a dremel, as the huge variety of bits and accessories make it a real pleasure to work with. There are a ton of neat things that you can do with it, and with the wand attachment it can be very easy to control. The variable speed will work in your favor as well.
I prefer to use a small handheld engraver. It's noisy but very precise, easy to control, and much lighter to work with than a dremel. Also, they are super cheap, mine was only $12 at the local hardware store.
In combination with lighting effects, acrylic etching can be a super easy way to add loads of character to your mod.
