Gloves come in many styles. The ones pictured are (just in case you can't read it) used to protect your hands from metal shards. These types of gloves are usually leather, although a heavy cloth glove will give nearly the same protection. Expect to pay anywhere from $5 to $40 (American dollars) for a good set of leather/cloth gloves.
Latex gloves come in quite handy when working with material such as Bondo. Easy cleanup, and as an added bonus, your hands won't stink for days on end! Added bonus: they're relatively cheap (3 pair for $1 American).
Gloves should never be used with power tools, especially any type of sawing tool. when wearing gloves, the gloves make the wearers hands bigger, whereas the wearer is used to the limits of his hand without gloves. this means that when the wearer reaches towards a saw, (s)he will think that their hands end at a certain point, but the gloves extend that point, and thus the gloves can catch on the power tool and draw the user's hands into the tool.
Lastly, if you are planning on doing any chemical-based paint stripping, a pair of neoprene gloves is an absolute must. These bad boys are resistant to *most* chemicals, and like their latex relatives, on the cheap side as well (1 pair for ~$3 American, YMMV).
