Installing Windows XP

How To Install Windows XP

This tutorial explains how to freshly install windows XP onto a computer.


Before purchasing Windows XP, you will need to make sure that your computer has the necessary specification required:


  • 233 MHz CPU
  • 64 MB of RAM (may limit performance and some features)
  • 1.5 GB of available hard disk space
  • Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
  • CD-ROM or DVD drive
  • Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device


Once you have checked that your computer specification is up to scratch, lets get installing!


1) To start with turn on your PC and insert the Windows XP CD. Then restart the computer and press any key to boot from the CD.

2) Once you see the blue screen below, if you have any RAID drivers that need installing you will need to press F6. Once you have done that let the blue screen finish what it is doing.

3) When the next screen below appears, press enter to continue with the setup process.

4) Read the EULA license agreement and once your satisfied that you agree to it, press F8 to continue.

5) At this step you need to choose the partition that you would like to install Windows XP to. In most cases you need to select C:.

6) The setup files will now be copied to your Hard-Drive. Wait until the bar gets to 100% and the system will then reboot. When the system has loaded it will pop-up and say 'Press any key to load from CD'. DO NOT press anything and let the system boot.

7) When the system boots it will come up with a screen like the one below. Leave it be until it asks you to do something.

8) The first box to come up is the settings shown below. Users from the United States will probably not need to change anything. Set the settings as you want them though.

9) Next enter you personal details when the screen below shows.

10) Next you will need to enter your Windows XP Key. Complete within the boxes as it asks.

11) This next part differs between Windows XP Home and Proffesional. Complete the information asked in whichever edition you have installed.

12) Next you will have to set the date and time up.

13) If you have a NIC (Network Interface Card) or a modem connected to your computer, setup will now install them so they work when setup is complete.

14) Next you will have to select your network settings. It is advised that you keep the typical settings.

15) If you are installing Windows XP Professional, the next step will apply to you. You need to type the Domain which you would like to join(or create). Once again it is advised that you keep the default MSHOME.

16) Once these last steps have been completed, Windows XP setup will now finish the rest by itself.

17) Next the boot screens will appear once the computer has restarted. (Remember when it asks to 'Press any key to boot from CD' Do Not' press anything, let Windows boot and it is now safe to remove the CD.) The different screens are shown below.

18) Next you will get to the 'Welcome to Microsoft' screen shown below. Follow the instructions thought this part.

19) When you get to the User screen shown below, enter the names of the users that you want to be-able to use the PC.

20) Next the logon screen will load shown below. Select which user you would like to logon as.

21) Windows XP has now finished installing!
