OS X is a Operating system developed and produced by Apple Inc.. The Operating System is designed to run on a Apple Macintosh computer, more commonly know as a Mac. The OS X System is named after big-cats, so far they have produced:
OS X 10.0 Cheetah,
OS X 10.1 Puma,
OS X 10.2 Jaguar,
OS X 10.3 Panther,
OS X 10.4 Tiger,
OS X 10.5 Leopard (Due to be released Spring 2007).
A Different version of OS X is the version that will run on Apples iPhone.
Previosly Apple had released Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9. OS X, 'X' being the roman numeral for 10, was the next generation in the Operating System.

The first development of OS X was Released in March, 2001. Most people said that the first edition was not fully 'completed' and small amount of programs avalible. The Mac community saw this as a major date in history and after a few bug fixes people began to see how stable the Operating System was. Apple recieved much praise for a stable and User friendly System. |

The second version of Apple's Operating System was released the same year as the first, in September 2001. It offered new features such as DVD playback, The OS was released as a upgrade for Mac OS X 10 users, although some discovered that the disck was a full install CD and with a few file changes on Mac OS 9 they could install OS X 10.1. |

Released August 2002, Apple again managed to improve on the Operating System. This version was much quicker as a result of performance enhancements, new look and over 100 powerful enhancments. In Jaguar Apples on Instant Messing service was introduced known as iChat. A new boot screen showing a Grey Apple was used instead of the Happy Mac. Many described this as the first good solid release for OS X. |

Panther was released in October 2003, it again brought performance increase. It brought the largest update to the UI so far. Panther signaled the end of the line for some of Apple's G3 systems. It brought many new features to the table a updated Finder, Safari web browser, Video functionality to iChat and much more. |

Tiger released April 2005 brought again a host of new features. Again some of Apples older systems were discontinued. Tiger needs a Apple system to have a Firewire port before it can be installed. Tiger introduced the Dashboard to Mac systems allowing some amzingly cool and useful widgets. It brought along Spotlight a great search program, along with many more programs. Tiger was the first Apple OS to support Intel based Macs as well as previous PowerPC processors. |

Leopard was announced by Steve Jobs(Apple's CEO) at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conferance) 2005 in June. It was first shown to developers at the WWDC in August 2006. It is due to be released Spring 2007 (Now delayed till Autumn 2007, due to the iPhone). This is the second version of OS X to support both PowerPC and Intel Macs. Again This release of OS X brings some new and interesting features to the OS: 1. Time Machine: A revolutionary program allowing you to 'go back in time' on your Mac, allowing you to locate lost files, deleted data and much more. It's seriosly cool and could be one of the top features of OS X. 2.Spaces: Allows you to have 4 'virtual monitors' in one real one. Spaces allows you to swith between areas that you can open different programs in allows you to have one for fun, work internet, and communication. And the best bit, Its customizable to what you want. 3. Bootcamp a final release version of Apples Bootcamp comes pre-installed with Leopard. Bootcamp allows you to run Microsoft Windows on your Mac. |
