[edit] WARNING

Modifying your system files can cause problems if not peformed correctly. Failure to follow all procoutions beforehand will result in you screaming and pulling your hair out!

ALWAYS BACKUP your entire system or atleast the files your changing.

I can not and don't accept any damage to your system as a result of this tutorial. You peform this at your own risk.

[edit] Intro

Ever thought that your icons in my computer don't suit the drive in question, or just too plain old boring?

Well this is how to edit them to suit your own needs, this has been tested to be working with windows 2000, XP and 2003.

[edit] What you will need

  • Your icons you will use
  • Something to make notes on, Notepad is a good use for this.

[edit] Getting started

Download or locate all the icons you will be using and place them in a single directory, a good one would be “C:\Icons” Next create a notepad document with all the data you will need, IE:

“Drive 1, (C, Label: System Drive, System.ico”

“Drive2,(D, Label: Download Drive, Download.ico”

When you create this document enter the drive number, The drive letter, the label you want and the name of the icon you wish to use.

[edit] The hard part

Now load “REGEDIT” (Start-->Regedit) and navigate to the key

“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Explorer\” Now create a key labeled “DriveIcons” (Note the capatilasion) Next create a key for each drive letter ie:

Image:reg1.png

Within each key create sub keys labeled: “DefaultIcon” and “DefaultLabel” Change the value of default within the DefaultIcon so it points to the icon you wish to use.

Image:reg2.png

Next change the value of Default in DefaultLabel to what ever you wish to be seen. Do this for every drive. Exit Regedit and load my computer and see all your hard work, if you see a broken icon image check the path for the icon.

And your mod is now complete, Enjoy.
