Ram timings

From TheBestCaseScenario

Jump to: navigation, search

Random Access Memory (RAM) timings effect the performance of the memory, making these faster (lower) means the memory can process it quicker, getting it to and from the CPU faster.

On more modern systems such as Intel's Core 2 Duos memory timings do not appear to have that much of an effect, although AMD systems usually benefit from them.

Most DDR2 memory has timings of around 4-4-4-12 and upwards depending on the speed of the memory. DDR3 memory has higher speeds but the performance is still greater as the speed is much faster.

Memory can become unstable when dropping the timings down, to test memory for stability run a program called Memtest86 [1] This can be downloaded and run off a Floppy or a CD during the boot process.
