Recycling

From TheBestCaseScenario

Jump to: navigation, search

Recycling, sometimes referred to as "kitbashing" or "scrap modeling", is the practice of using leftover bits and everyday objects as items for use in a modeling or modding project. This includes using leftover sprue from model kits, leftover items from previous projects, and the incorporation of objects from all over the house or yard. Many modelers use this in their designs and a few go so far to view kitbashing as a philosophy or way of life.

The first thing to do when deciding to kitbash is to build up a good collection of potentially useful items. A cardboard box, known as a bits box, is often sufficient for most modelers, but many often find it necessary to sort and organize their bits in storage bins. A portable tackle box or a multi-drawer tool bin is an excellent place to store and organize such a collection, at least for smaller objects.

The second thing to do, once you've decided that this type of modeling is for you, is to change the way you look at things. Instead of throwing away things when you are done with them, take a look at their shape and the material they are made of - most garbage bins are filled to the brim with fantastic objects that can be used for a modeling project. Toothpaste caps, milk jug lids, old medicine bottles, etc. are frequently used in this way to create all sorts of terrific and amazing models, once given the artistic eye of a "scrap modeler".
