I always build my own computers! (http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTE4NzIxMTg5NjZKUlo5U29kNTdfMV8yX 2wuanBn)

I just pulled this link from HardOCP. Made me laugh out loud.. :D

Greco: Depends on how much of a starfish the (l)user is.
However, I have a feeling that that actually happened, having hung around with Tech-support/Hell-desk types for too long.

TSC FTW. :D

If you still don't get what the problem is, it's best you don't build your own PC...

You have to add the <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags around here for proper readability. ;)

well you guys are about to see some weird sh*t .... lol

In rearraging the cooling for deskpooter I am trying without a fan on the CPU cooler. Instead there is a fan housed in the side of the case blowing cold air from outside the case directly at the heatsink.

And before anyone tells me I'm nuts click on my sig pic and look at the size of the damn CPU heatsink I have first lol. In tests they found it works without a fan quite well enough.

Pictures to come in the deskpooter thread later. I've been busy modding for three days solid and capturing it on (I want to say film but am forced to say memory cards haha)

Rather than blowing air in, have it pulling out, but still located near the cpu heatsink. You'll find the ambient case temp will be WAAAY lower, and the cpu may even run a few degrees cooler in this config.

On all Dell towers I've worked on, I've found that a great many of them having the rear case fan blowing in rather than pulling out. These are also computer with repeated failures and stability issues. Flipping the fans has resolved every one of them so far. :D

Luke,

This is how it was:

I have just mounted the fan on to the heatsink that is above it on that diagram and ducted the air into it from outsiude the case. Are you thinking if I just spin that so its blowing out and then maybe spin the one at the front of the case so its drawing in that will be more efficient?

I don't think it would hurt to try.

I say switch the directions of all the fans. The two on the right of your diagram blowing in, and the two on the left pulling out. :)

Currently, the heat from your cpu is being pushed over your mobo, and into the area with the drives. If you reverse it, the heat from the cpu is removed immediately from the case.

<wakkawakka>But hey, with that heatsink on his case, he has a REALLY cool case!</wakkawakka>

Can't switch the PSU fan - and in any case that would just mean the heat of the PSU blowing over everything - am trying with the heatsink fan and front fan switched and seeing how that works, cos what you are saying about blowing the air from the CPU over everything certainly makes sense ! cheers

Ah ok, I didnt notice that one of those fans was the PSU. So yes, leave the psu as is, but reverse the one near the cpu to pull out, and I think you'll still see a significant drop in temps. :D
