Main rig:

AMD Athlon XP Barton 2600+ LV (AXDL mobile, 1.5v) @3200 (2.2 GHz, 1.575v), finmodded Tt Volcano 11/80mm SmartFan
EPoX 8RDA3I Pro (nForce2)
2x256 Micron 5B-G and 1x512 Samsung TCB3 in dual channel
Sapphire Radeon x1600Pro 256MB @stock (fan and plastic shroud removed, 92mm Delta under stock heatsink)
420w Enermax Noisetaker
160 GB WD Caviar 7200/8MB/IDE
LG DVD+RW
Lite-On CD-RW/DVD-ROM
all in a stock (it's the decent case until I get something custom worked up) silver Ultra Aluminus
Windows XP Pro SP1 w/SharpEShell

Backup machines:

AMD Sempron 2800+/A @stock, 70mm finmodded copper sink
Biostar M7VIG-400 (possibly a Shuttle AN35 if it isn't cactus)
Either 512 or 1 GB of cheap PC3200 (one stick's going, I think)
Powercolor Radeon 9250 128MB
10GB/7200 and 60GB/5400 IDE Maxtors
300-350w (dunno exactly) Channel Well
Philips CD-RW
Pioneer DVD-ROM
Epson 3.5"/5.25" combo floppy
HP/Colorado T3000 tape drive (to make it look like a Serious Server)
11 year old Gateway full tower, 92mm front/2x80mm rear, but going in PC: Load Letter eventually
Windows XP Pro

1 GHz AMD Athlon Thunderbird
PCChips M810LR
2x128 Micron PC133
Abit Siluro GF2 MX200 32MB w/TV-Out
30GB Maxtor
250w Wintech (one of the good ones)
DVD-ROM (think it's a Samsung, don't remember)
AT-era 4U rackmount, black and dented, looks like a Mad Max case, and it's unmodded!
Windows 2000 Pro SP4

And now, the ostrich in the horse race.

Power Macintosh 7600/132
132 MHz PowerPC 604
Stock Apple motherboard
80 MB RAM
Onboard video
1.2 GB (iirc) Quantum SCSI
150w Delta
SCSI CD-ROM
Cardboard box with holes cut in it
Mac OS 8.6

The Barton has dual 21" CRTs hooked to it, one of which is dual-input, so the Mac, or whichever computer I'm testing, is on the second input. Got a third one too, but it's got some sort of issue.

There's several other systems around the house, in various stages of assembly. The Sempron's actually apart at the moment, but it's my second machine, so I'm counting it here. The other machines include a 233 MHz original iMac, an Athlon 850 Pluto on one of the Slot A boards I have around, a dead P4 2.4 I need to get running again, and a 25 MHz Quadra 610 with 28 MB of RAM. Yeah, more megs of RAM than megahertz...

MSI K9A Platinum
Athlon 64 X2 3800+

A dying 350W PSU
Maxtor 82.0GB IDE HDD
SATA DVD Burner w/ LightScribe
Microsoft MX6000 Wireless desktop
ViewSonic 20" HD Widescreen @ 1680*1050 res
5 fans (PSU, 2 Case, CPU & GPU)

Only scores 3300 on 3DMark06, but still plays games the way I like it on 1024 res.

Well mine is probs around $3500AUS, it's mad about $1000 of it I had before the build (case, PSU, drives, monitor, speakers)

FuzzyPlushroom
09-03-2007, 07:07 AM
Hmm, paid $65 for the board a couple years ago, $50 for the CPU and heatsink from a buddy of mine in Toronto, $60 shipped for the PSU, $60 for the hard drive (after rebates), $30 for the case, $130 for the video card just over a year ago, $35 maybe for the DVD burner... the combo drive, fans, and cables were free. Got three 21" CRTs for $90, using two of them on here.

The second computer, man, I forget. Too much. I made up for that, since the 1 GHz system, the Tbird, didn't cost me a dime - the only thing I didn't scavenge or have given to me was the case, which I traded for another old case I wasn't using. And the Power Mac cost me $10 and came with a Huge Box O' Software.

That, as they say, is that.

I think it's the newer version, my dad brought it home one day a few months ago. But everything in my computer runs like it's a few years old anyway. Ha, we're an endangered minority group.

So far, I've put in about $1500 for mine I think. Somewhere around there.

When I get an 8800GTS, my WC setup, and new monitor (then I'll have all new components) it'll probably be around $2200. Not too bad considering this is why I got my job in the first place.

It makes me feel better about my PC when I read some of the specs here. I'm not saying that other people's are worse than mine, but many aren't better. There are a lot that are better too. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't feel any rush to upgrade mine now. I'll post specs later. I'm off to bed.

The current set up I have for my day to day rig is all pretty mid range, but does a great job for what I need.
CPU: Intel E2140 1.6Ghz (This thing absolutely wallops the 3.07Ghz Celeron D it replaced, even the the clock speed is almost half)
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-965GM-S2 (http://www.gigabyte.com.au/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2388) Micro ATX. (Chosen because I prefer Gigabyte and this one had 7.1 onboard audio and 6 SATA ports)
RAM: 2x1Gb sticks of Kingston DDRII 667
Video: 2x20" Samsung SyncMaster 203B LCDs plugged into a Gigabyte 8600GT video card (only decent card I could find that had 2 DVI ports, had sVideo and RCA output for TV and most importantly, only takes up one PCI slot), I also have a el-cheapo AOC 19" widescreen LCD hooked up to the onboard video on the MoBo.
Storage: 160Gb Maxtor for OS, 320Gb Seagate and two 500Gb Samsung drives for media storage. All drives are SATA.

Spawn, I don't have that to run, but you can check the different CPU scores in this post (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showpost.php?p=140397&postcount=81) in the Aquamark thread. The E2140 gets almost THREE times as high a score as the Celeron D!

I tend to have the CPU usage meter running in my task bar. With the Celeron D it would hit 100% while refreshing the forum and watching a DVD at the same time. The DVD would start to stutter. It would do the same thing while using the TV tuner card.

Now I can have the TV tuner open and recording a show on one screen, watch a DVD on the next screen and have the forum open on the last and be downloading something all at the same time and it barely gets to 70-80%.

After my experience with the Celeron D I will NEVER recommend it to anyone! Friends don't let friends buy Celeron chips.

ok so going with the :pics:

i will start.

heres mine, still god some minor work to go (need a window on the power supply). and i need my gaming parts. right now i'm waiting on 4gbs or ram.

so far the mods i've done to it are;
PSU window mod
Added a lock to the case(last picture)
painted it black (inside, outside was already black)
changed out power, floppy drive, dvd led's for blue leds.

Oh and before anyone asks those DVD's aren't pr0n, they are disks that come with a monthly gaming mag that I subscribe to.

I will post a complete revision of my specs and pics when my mod is complete.

Nice, I like that aluminum bay cover.

(If it was addressed toward me) Thanks, not bad for a $30 case after rebates. Pretty light, too, and 5x 5.25" bays.

The Thunderbird. This is the kind of computer cockroaches will be using after the nuclear holocaust, undoubtably hooked up to similar 17" CRTs (my mother's borrowing it, or else it'd be second fiddle on the right 21" in here):

http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/2752/tb2adjzp0.jpg

Well, assuming the cockroaches could even turn it on - there is no power button. You have to stick one end of a piece of wire in Pin 4 of the old AT keyboard connector on the front, and short the other end to the metal around the port. The reset button, at least, works normally, I think - I don't remember if I bothered to hook it up.

All in all, even without the door, I reckon that case was a good trade for the dented, half-there InWin S500 I had sitting downstairs. :D

The only way to use more then 3.5GBs of RAM with Windows is if your running a server edition, or Vista x64. I believe XP x64 will see up to 4GBs, but im not 100% on this. I learned the hard way, back on page 5 you'll see I have 8GBs of RAM.

Rule of thumb:
32bit windows can see 4GB of ram, but can only use so much, windows takes soo much away for devices such as your GFX,
Example,
Install 4GB ram, have 512MB GFX card, windows will tell you you have 3.5GB, have a 700MB GFX windows will say you have 3.3GB.

But don't forget that you have to take all your PCI devices off, if they have a rom or memory, this gets deducted also. Its to do with Memory mapping

Windows 64bit can see upto 32GB, but the same thing applys but only when you get to 32MB of ram.

Windows server can see huge ammounts but it all depends on what version you use, i think the top server can see about 125TB

I just left microsoft as a support tech. XP will only see 3.5GB of RAM. Vista 32bit will only see up to 3.5GB as well. Basically, in any 32-bit operating system...including linux distros...the virtual address space is limited by definition to a 32-bit value...

example would be:
232 = 4,294,967,296

4,294,967,296 / (1,024 x 1,024) = 4,096

As for XP (32-bit), 4,096 megabytes is it. That's all it can address.

If you want more than 4 GB of memory on XP or Vista 32, it is possible however it takes hardware hacking (36-bit PAE extensions of the CPU) and software re-coding (like the AWE API). Also, your apps have to be specifically coded to be take advantage of these hacks..otherwise you are still stuck at using 4 GB. Also, you WILL void your hardware warranty.

You've noticed that although 32-bit Windows can address up to 4GB of RAM , you never can see more that 3-3.5GBs? So what is going on with that missing space? Memory-mapped devices like your sound and Video card are using some of that physical address space (even the BIOS ROMs do too). After all the non-memory devices have had their say, there will be less than 4GB of address space available for RAM below the 4GB physical address boundary...Basically 3.5GBs.

Remember the 8086 days when memory was broken up between 'conventional' 640k and the 'other' 384k?

Now before you bash windows...this isn't a Windows only/created problem-- it's an x86 hardware problem. Linux has the same issues so switching to a different 32-bit OS isn't going to make the problem go away. It's the architecture that IBM designed...be pissed at them ;)

The new 64-bit OS's can address up to 8 Terabytes of RAM...but make SURE your board and bios can support more than 4GBs before dropping the cash.

My advice is if are planning to stick with XP pro 32-bit or Vista 32-bit for the next few years, don't waste your money on 4 GB of RAM. You won't be able to use it all. Buy 3 GB instead.
