Alright, I couldn't find the old thread on this topic a while back..... Some of you may remember...

anyway... I stumbled across a program that actually works... WELL... at boosting your cable speed. After running, I also noticed my ping times doubled.

Sorry, when I posted, I couldn't remember where I found it so I googled it after and forgot to post :oP

Tried it on my gfs friend's vista laptop and it was a no-go (dl speed went down by 1000kb and her ul went down by almost 100kb). Thought it MAY be because of wireless but I just tried it on my gf's laptop (xp) and her DL speed went from 6000 to 19,000!

Yes i remember CrazyBuhdist showed this to me a while ago. It almost doubled my d/l speed. started at 7k kb/s now i get 13k kb/s.. Great program:up:

These are the basic of basic directions. If anyone is a network geek and really knows their stuff, it'd be nice to learn a little more about the other options in the program. :o)

tried it again after a format and had negative affects. I believe NvidiaFirewall had a lot to do with the large initial decrease, then large increase after applied.

Unfortunately, I found out that it was the nvidia firewall conflicting with some games (some of you may remember me posting in the fix it shop about games lagging on me, causing one core to max/nearly freeze my computer) so it had to be deleted. Once deleted, you're internet connection does too... it's nicely tangled in the system so once removed (even though it is not a necessity for ANYTHING) everything goes crazy which forced me to reformat again...

Download didn't decrease too much though... averaging around 19k. (still...wtf? Why would firewall software boost your speeds? It is an option in the mobo drivers, and since the NICs are on the mobo....? I dunno... somewhat annoying though.

On XP and Win2K it is very unusual not to see a speed increase. It doesn't work too well on all wifi receivers though. Some just stop working.

WUT? I can barely break 8 MB and my speed is REALLY sporadic, as in, most of the time it doesn't go over 2MB.:( They don't have FIOS in my area yet.

these types of programs always toss hellacious protocol errors at me. and my buddies say i look funny on video games (ghostin' shimmers' n' studders)

Well, after getting the 3G module today for the Gigabyte T1028X netbook tablet, I did a speed test.

This is like the best company around. I'm going to do some more digging for one but once you get one you don't change. Setup fee was $950

I did a little looking, and it looks like you could definitely get actually decent speeds with satellite for lower monthly fees than what you're paying now...it would probably have a pretty hefty initial equipment fee though...crazy that if you buy similar equipment in the US or Europe, the equipment costs ~$130, but if you buy it in Africa it's over $3,000. :eek:

Those limitations are rarely abritrary, it's to do with signal degradation over distance. I used to sell radio transmitted broadband to rural customers who didn't understand that beyond a certain distance, connection becomes untenable.

I've found few apps which deliver better speeds than manual tweaking, and enough of them cause secondary hassles or attempt extortion for money that I don't even bother anymore. Keep my machinery clean and trim without adding questionable baggage, small code executes faster anyways.

However I did notice phenomenal and certain improvements in internet speeds after tweaking my cable modem's DOCSIS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS). It seems my ISP neglected to configure it in the way that would best serve me, so I fixed it.
