So I want to make a casemod based on the Mustang GT but unlike Tech-Daddy's (amazing) it will be based on the new 2005 and up Mustang body. So I was thinking of putting a hood scoop on top, but i want to try and make it a little different than that one and I just saw aphexcloud's Chevy case with that as well so maybe i wont do a hood scoop.

Anyway I am thinking of putting the Mustang chrome horse logo on the front in front of the fanhole i will cut, and painting the case red, with black or white racing stripes down the middle. That is everything i have thought of so far i think.

So here are the goods I have so far:
My case: (Craigslist $10)
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul001.jpg

Got this today!!!: (Craigslist free!) Thats the grill from a 2000 mustang and a standard air intake thing... or something. anyway the exciting part is the chrome mustang.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul025.jpg

More goodness today: Black & Decker Mouse sander (Home Depot $40)
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul028.jpg

And one more thing: '95 Saturn left rearview mirror. Got knocked off my brothers car so i grabbed it when he got a new one. I dont know what Ill use it for. No i am not planning to stick a rearview mirror on my pc, i meant just the mirror part! :lick:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul029.jpg

So thats all for now. I have never made a worklog before and this is my second mod. (kind of) so I hope I am doing everything right!

This should be interesting. I love car-themed mods, and I've got the same case, so I'm looking forward to seeing the results. +sub

Go go big dog! Do your own flavor of the mod! Sounds like you have a good plan!

As far as scoops go, if you want one, then do one! Just do it differently than others have done it!

I have another mod in my head (amongst all of the other things dancing around trying to push their way to the front and get into a mod...) that uses a different type of scoop...

It's still a scoop, and those will be used for ever!

Just because you have seen others do something similar, dont let that dissuade you if you have a bitchen design.

Go for it!

Thanks man! So i'm thinking of doing a hood scoop like this one:
http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/attachments/2005-talk/25441d1174854473-looking-boss-hood-scoop-2005-mustang-paint-job-039.jpg
and not all the way across the top of the case. Ive got some bondo from my last mod but ill need some sheet metal or something to form it.

And i have a question: my case here has the right side and top stuck together into one big piece, and that all riveted together to the chassis.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul026.jpg
so i wanted to paint the inside a solid color but i dont know how to do that without making it difficult when i want to paint the outside. I also dont want to un rivet the whole thing. I guess i could... but i dont want to. any suggestions?

also another weird thing is 3/4ths of the bottom comes off but the other 1/4th is attached to that right side and top piece! it was attached with 2 screws and 1 pointless rivet.

FYI.. the new Mustangs have (optional) color changing gauges. Being an LED junkie, I would try and incorporate that somewhere. Another cool thing would be to emulate the front lights on the GT's. Maybe grab some clear 80mm fans with white LED's and find a fan guard that matches the housing on the lights.

Thanks for the ideas SgtM.
Ive sanded down all the panels now.. Heres the only pic I have right now.

COOL... always love that car... what if you chuck in bits n parts from Shelby GT500 and the new 850bhp monster?

Joonce
07-17-2008, 06:26 PM
I would love to do that but acquiring parts from a Shelby GT500 might be slightly over budget.

So I drilled out all the rivets holding the side panel on... only to find out everything is actually secretly connected to the side/top panel. The Motherboard tray and drive bays are like welded or glued to the panel. So now i have to try to bolt it back together in a few places because some places are inaccessible.

http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul038.jpg

here is where it is stuck together. I would try to take it off that but then the whole case would fall apart. Mostly.

I cut a hole in the case and bondoed up the front panel. needs more sanding.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul040.jpg
Thats a piece of pvc pipe in there.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul041.jpg

http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul042.jpg

Mmmm... Mustang
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul043.jpg

Im not sure if this hole is the normal size for the plate that snaps in there that came with my Motherboard, so i might need to do something about that... and there is not enough room for even an 80mm fan on the back here.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/2008-7Jul044.jpg

Im gonna be gone for a week so no updates for a while.

So, I know I left this project for about a year, and I'm sorry I didn't say anything about it, but anyway I'm back now, and this time I hope to finish it. I just started again and I have gotten a bit of progress. I noticed there have been a few sweet car mods in my absence also!

So here is the new workspace:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0339.jpg

I made room for a 120mm fan on the back panel. Previously not even an 80mm could fit. I cut out part of the recessed area and flipped it around.
original is top left, and the other 2 are after the bondo and the fan hole.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/Backpanel.jpg

Here is the front panel. I will be building in the card reader, and I have it positioned correctly so when I put it in it slides right up to the face of the reader that I bondoed in there.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0343.jpg
You can also see my riveter in the background. It's quite handy.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I salvaged the card reader and the usb, firewire, and audio ports from an old Compaq that was laying around.
I am planning to have it all seamlessly integrated into the font panel.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/frontpanel.jpg
The ports can fit inside the metal holder, and then line up with the plastic front part. But those don't fit inside a normal 5.25 bay. So I'll need to cut them down.

So I need to decide if I want the ports left aligned or centered.
I have made a helpful image to show each.

I like the left better, and if you can do something good on the right with the extra space, that's even better.

Joonce
07-26-2009, 02:27 AM
Thanks for the input, but I have actually already put part of it in place before I saw any of it :lick:. Anyway I left aligned it, much to the dismay of Cheron and nevermind1534. I dont know what I should do with the right space.

Actually the only picture I have of it is this one, in the far corner, but believe me I did a lot of work on it today!

Now, some pics of recent buys:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0358.jpg

This is actually a gutter guard, but I think it will work great for mesh.

Removing the hinges:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0366.jpg

Also I think It looks kind of like a Mustang grill anyway!
http://i902.photobucket.com/albums/ac227/evancotter/detail-grill-1.jpg

Here is a clear plastic briefcase I found that I will use to make the window:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0364.jpg

And here is a (Saturn) rear view mirror that I am planning to cut "GT" out of. Does anyone know how to cut a mirror?
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0363.jpg
Interesting side note: the mirror is mirror on both sides. 8)

Here are a few possible materials to make a hood scoop out of:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0356.jpg
I was thinking the trash can but it is a bit floppy. Maybe I could reinforce it with the floppy sheet of metal.

As you may have noticed a lot of this stuff I had laying around.

More soon!

umm.. mirror.. cutting...

idk.. tile cutter?

slaveofconvention
07-26-2009, 09:22 AM
To cut the mirror, a tile/glass cutter will do the straight edges - afraid I have NO clue how you'd go about doing the curves though... A file would probably just chip the hell out of it, or have no effect at all. Might be worth getting some scrap glass - a bottle or something and trying different things with that - WITH eye protection of course lol - I wonder if it could be ground down with sandpaper & block???

I did some looking around...
You can get a couple of diamond attachments for Dremel, like this one,
http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-545D-545-Diamond-Wheel/dp/B00004UDI9
or here, for a better price,
http://www.ehobbytools.com/index1.html
I guess you can also get a diamond grinding attachment would probably be easier for the curves.
Or you could go fancy,

Wow I just looked at that cutting disc, do you know if it will last a long time cutting aluminium, some of the reviews on the amazon page seem fantastic, could really use a slim long lasting cutting disc for detail work.

I got my hood scoops for Superbee, Cuda 440, and Mustang GT350 on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270424991165&viewitem=&salenotsupported)

Thanks everyone, and Mark thanks for the links. I think I may buy from here. (http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Cutting-Disc-Set-Shank/dp/B000P49NCC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1248654784&sr=8-2)

So if I cut with a normal reinforced cut off disk you think it will break? How about a grinding wheel or something? I guess I'll just try the diamond ones.

Chaos Theory I am just a moneyless 16 year old too! I guess I'm not totally moneyless though. But most of the materials I am using I got for cheap or free, and I can usually get my dad to pay for anything he thinks he could use, like drill bits, rivet guns, and saw blades. :)

If I cant make a hood scoop myself I may have to order one thanks TheGreatSatan. Also I had never seen your Mustang GT350 before, may I ask where you got the gold vinyl? I was thinking of painting a side stripe under the window, but vinyl would be so much easier and I can't find any on Amazon. I found this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GG2H8K/sr=8-1/qid=1248668289/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1248668289&sr=8-1&seller=) though I might get.

So I didnt do much today, but what I have done I present to you:
Drilled 3/8" hole.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0372.jpg

Used ancient jig saw with new blade
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0375.jpg
Worked quite well, was really easy to cut the steel.

And here you can kind of see the side panel design.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0376.jpg
I was planning on having a 120mm fan in the bottom left there, but that covers a lot of the window, so I stopped after the first cut on the panel to think about the design.

And that is all.

TheGreatSatan

I'm back with updates.

Used some dremel grinding tools
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0380.jpg

Also every shape and size of file you could possibly need.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0384.jpg

The side panel
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0385.jpg

The shape of things to come.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0388.jpg

I cut a hole for a top fan.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0392.jpg
The fan has to be on top of the case because it just barely wont fit with the psu and dvd drive in place. Plus all the wires from that.

I will be using a plastic trash can to create the hood scoop.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0393.jpg

http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0397.jpg

http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0398.jpg

http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0402.jpg

http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0404.jpg

I realize now that I am going to need some air vents or something on top of the hood scoop if I want the fan to get any air. The tiny front hole just wont be enough. I might need a redesign.

You might try to raise the front of the scoop by making a wedge shaped piece to go under the sides, that would give you a bigger opening in front.

rodrosenberg
07-30-2009, 07:35 PM
or drop the front of the fan down to the level of the top of the case it should work at low RPM's

blueonblack
07-30-2009, 08:32 PM
What about making the portion of the scoop that's over the fan out of mesh of some kind? Painted the same as the rest of the scoop?

Joonce
07-31-2009, 11:42 PM
Well I made some wedge shaped pieces like msmrx57 suggested.
You cant really see them in either of these two pictures but they are there.
I covered the framework with some more plastic and then bondoed over that.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0406.jpg

Used masking tape to keep the bondo from falling through the holes.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0408.jpg

I decided I needed more room for hard drives than only two bays, but my new front fan is in the way of the old second bay spot. So I drill some holes and riveted it to the side of the case.
Before:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0409.jpg

And after:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0411.jpg

The removable bay to the left goes inside of the one I riveted.

Now back to the hood scoop.
I did another layer of bondo.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0412.jpg

I currently have €10 (about $14) but I'm going to help my dad with some remodeling work so maybe I'll make enough money to do a mod, if I don't break down and get a meizu m8 that is, those things are nice!

Joonce
08-07-2009, 01:00 AM
I am back again, and it may not look like I've done much... and I guess I really haven't. :lick:

Anyway I don't have the same fears you all have about it cracking or anything, it really isn't that much bondo, just a thin layer. It's all sanded down now though so take a look in the next few pics. It did sort of look like frosting on a cake though.

I had to sand down places where the plastic frame was in the way and touch it up a bit a few times, because the plastic didn't sand as fast as the bondo and it poked out a bit.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0419.jpg

And I have skipped a lot of in between steps, but that is because it was the same thing over and over again. But here it is in its current state, and just sanding a few touch ups and it will be ready to paint. I think.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0423.jpg

Because the top fan is sucking in I think the scoop is tall enough now.

The front panel. It may not look smooth in the picture but it is quite smooth. Except for that upper right red spot.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0424.jpg

Hood scoop again.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/Joonce/IMG_0427.jpg

4 Yate Loon fans and 2 white cold cathodes. I took a gamble with the fans and got the cheapy ones. I got the low speed ones, and I am hoping they are quiet. Or at least moderately quiet. From Xoxide.

Sorry for no updates in a while, but I've been a little busy. Still working on it though!

As I have mentioned before, I cannot fully take apart the case, and only one side panel can come off, so painting the inside and out a different color is difficult, but I have managed. On to the pics!

Finally, Finally ready to paint.

I put the tape on wax paper and cut out strips with a fabric cutter of my mom's. Its like a pizza cutter, but for fabric. It worked great.

These pics may look like a little orange peel, but it is very smooth and just needs a clear coat or 2.

Nicely done side panel, simple and good looking and functional, I like the top fan extension made into a very nice diy scoop, very nicely done so far mate, nice one :) +rep

Are you planning on putting on enough clear to make the stripes level with the paint? It's doable but a lot of work.....

Looking really nice, btw

Looks kewl as heck. The only suggestion I'd make would be to black out the inside of the scoop. Other than that LOVE it.

The top fan should be an exhaust one. Heat rises in your case too and it seems odd to force it cold air there. Otherwise, it's damn purty!

I have made a few minor changes since these pictures but things I would still like to do are:
fix the back panel i/o shield
black out inside of scoop
get a non scratchy window
organize the wiring

and some more that I cant think of right now.
Thanks for all your support!

it looks awesome. And you should know, a project is never finished. Only on hiatus until the next idea for it comes along.

Just looked through the worklog again and...

This is modding at its best imo, taking a really old pc case and making it a whole lot better nice and cheaply and you achieved this really well, I gotta confess I have been looking on ebay for the cheapest case I could find and make something good out of it for as cheap as possible just as a modders challenge kinda thing hehe :), its the whole reason I got into modding, the price of the Lian Li TYR PC-X2000 was a big part of what motivated me to make my own, that and I figured it could be done better :D.

I can see past the fan wires and the inside looks good, not hard to picture the fan wires routed out of view, what you did with the rear fan is awesome and the diy roof scoop is very well executed as is the front blower, I knew what body filler is, just did not know bondo was a term for it lol always wondered what bondo is hehe, anyway brilliant work mate :).

Yeah, bondo is the most popular (or well known at least) body filler over here, so the name stuck. Kind of like Kleenex (tissues).
