Sting.
A caseconstructie based on a mini-itx mobo.
This time I went for a small case-construction. Especially after I made the BFG
this time I wanted more contrast in my mod collection. Small mini-itx hardware is
much easier to build in larger boxes, boxes or suitcases, but a
entirely new custom case like this I've never seen.(yet)
The hardware.
This time I have a VIA EPIA ML5000EA motherboard, 17 x 17 cm.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_55.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_02.jpg
Everything is there and, video, 6 channel audio, 100 mbit lan and a passive cooled
533 MHz CPU.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_01.jpg
Also, I have a slot-in DVD player, it comes with an adaptor for the mobo.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_03.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_04.jpg
Then the HDD. First, I had a 40 GB 2.5 " laptop hard drive with an adaptor ....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_06.jpg
... but I've found something much more fun.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_07.jpg
A SSD of a simple CF card.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_08.jpg
A 2Gb CF card, and the adapter comes (where else) from Hong Kong.
Together with its passively cooled CPU and SSD he is 100% silent.
By comparison, a picture with a standard 3.5 "HDD, a 2.5" HDD and the
new SSD.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_09.jpg
Oh yes, and for comparison, this was a few years ago the 10 Megabyte Winchester
disk ....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_10.jpg
http://www.techepics.com/files/look_back_full.jpg
SketchUp.
My design is based on the general shape of a Scorpion.
Judging from the minimum sizes of the hardware (mobo, powersupply and slot-in
DVD player) I started playing with SketchUp.
I even have a photo taken of the motherboard and all hardware components and
in SketchUp used as texture. Can I recommend to everyone, looks much more
realistic.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_05.jpg
A body ...
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_11.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_12.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_13.jpg
a tail ...
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_14.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_15.jpg
and two arms with slicers/dicers.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_16.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_17.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_18.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_19.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_20.jpg
I have long sought materials for the case, and I've found something unique.
You know a lot of PCs are built from old motherboards, well, I found
industrial circuitboards that have not yet been finished.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_57.jpg
Beautiful dark green circuit boards, completely flat and clean.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_40.jpg
An additional bonus was found only afterwards, when you shine a light slightly behind / under it, it shows the print-threads through it.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_27.jpg
A very nice effect, I think.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_26.jpg
As I used it with my R2-D2, I tried using the UV responsive gel pens again.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_39.jpg
Now my green pens bought them for this mod to be deployed, but my first
experimental did not gave me the effect what I thought of it.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_41.jpg
The Case.
As a basis, I have taken an aluminum plate of 1.5 mm thick.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_42.jpg
The measurements taken from SketchUp and drawn.
Converted to the minimum height of the backplate.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_43.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_44.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_45.jpg
Ontopic, see my latest toy, a Ferm figuresaw I got from the flea market (cost 12 euros).
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_52.jpg
And a new sander of Rexxon.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_53.jpg
Finishing is ofcourse still needed with needle files for finishing touch.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_54.jpg
The hole cut for the backplate.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_56.jpg
And then the sawn boards to the desired sizes.
Even a quick mock-up with adhesive tape.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_22.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_23.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_28.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_29.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_30.jpg
And now I show you how it looks with light behind it.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_25.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_32.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_33.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_34.jpg
For the assembly of printed circuit to the aluminum chassis I used
brackets of the same aluminum and popnagels.(rivets?)
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_46.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_47.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_48.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_51.jpg
For the tail, I got some perforated aluminum strip.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_49.jpg
Like it so far?

The standard wires from the pico power supply are way too long.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_58.jpg
Because the powersupply is right beneath the mobo, a forest of wires is stucking out above it, and we dont want that now, do we?
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_59.jpg
With some creative cutting and new connectors that piece is now tailored.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_60.jpg
The IDE cable that comes with the mobo is also standard way too long.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_61.jpg
This looks much better already.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_62.jpg
So it looks a little better already.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_63.jpg
Some connectors for the powerLED, HD-LED, reset and power switch, got them from old PCs, very handy to have laying around.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_64.jpg
The tail-backbone, I gave it some small nudges, in a logaritmic form.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_65.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_66.jpg
With some tape, I tried to imagine if my idea is going the right way.
It sort-off has to resemble scales of a snake/fish. like. ish. :D
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_67.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_68.jpg
Please note: this is only one side, the tail had three sides.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_69.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_70.jpg
The plates for one side of the tail
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_75.jpg
And for both sides.

Got a batch of defect computer hardware from Computer Service Maastricht, I guess recycling is a good thing, right?
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_78.jpg
Disassembled the harddrives.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_79.jpg
To give the case a bit more depth, I cut a large hole in the top panel.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_80.jpg
And an overlapping panel that is just a bit bigger.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_81.jpg
Some harddisk parts form little feet for that panel.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_82.jpg
And glued the large panel together on the toppanel.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_83.jpg
And now I have a bith more depth and detail.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_84.jpg
With a light behind it, it is still good looking IMO.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_85.jpg
In the meanwhile, I'm slowly getting the tail parts together, but forming the tail with the loose tiles is a very difficult and slow process, frustrating and tedious. :(
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_77.jpg
Frenkie

Here are some pictures of the tiles on the tail, secured with construction kits.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_71.jpg
A piece of foam, for me to help with securing the tail-sides.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_73.jpg
And that foam triangle runs off course into the tip.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_74.jpg
Here you see two pieces UV green plexi which I believe will create a slight glow underneath the case.

Thanx guys, much appriciated.
I have bought two green lasers from Hong Kong.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_86.jpg
They are very much larger than the red lasers that I've used in the BFG
:(
Buttttttt ..... just for comparison, look here is the light of a red laser on a lamp-reflector....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_87.jpg
..... and here the new green laser.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_88.jpg
So without any more delay, I gutted the pen's.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_89.jpg
And after the soldering of the wires, (and adaptation to 5 V) I finished it with shrinking tube (?)
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_90.jpg
Now it's much more suited to build it in this little mini case.
Frenkie
08-28-2008, 05:36 PM
At first I wanted to let both lasers shine through the slot-in player
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_91.jpg
But I changed my mind and now I want a laser mounted in the tail.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_92.jpg
From a cellphone motor and some pieces of aluminum I made a mini drill.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_93.jpg
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_94.jpg
It runs on one AA penlite battery and is really very small.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_95.jpg
This drill will be in one of the two arms.
For those arms, I have found this aluminum profile tube ....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_96.jpg
.... they fit neatly together.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_97.jpg
Maybe something like this? Who knows. See you at the next update.

Im FIRING MAH LAZORS lol nice
ROFL !!!
The drill will come in one of the "hand's" of the scorpion, on the other "hand" I am making some kind of circular Saw.
Let me show you what my idea behind the case + the lasers is.
The laser in the tail shines an X distance in front of the case.
íf I mount the second laser underneath the toppanel, I want it to shine in exactly the same spot as the tail laser.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING-LASERS.JPG
Seen from above, you can see that I've designed the case with a "focal point" for the physical dimensions of the case.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING-LASERS2.JPG
My idea is to get those two points/spots (laserspot and the physical focal point) really at onto each other. I am working to get my case that way.

An overview of the whole PC and the PSU in it. Here all the wires are wayyyyy to long, so I cut them to size and meshed them with green UV mesh.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_100.jpg
Been busy with the square tubing for both arms.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_101.jpg
Just playing with the various parts to get a better feel about the dimensions.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_102.jpg
Some idea for the left arm.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_103.jpg
and some fantasy about the right arm.

I toke some parts of the arms under the lathe and made some 1.5 mm cuttings in them.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_107.jpg
From the circuitboard I made the counterparts for those three cuttings.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_108.jpg
Here is one of those parts with the circuitboard.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_109.jpg
Fits like a glove.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_110.jpg
And the other ones too, looks pretty cool I think.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_111.jpg
For the slice-and-dice arm, I cut a slot in it of just 2 mm wide.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_112.jpg
Made thread in the tube that fits right in with M2 thread.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_113.jpg
And ofcourse a M2 screw.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_114.jpg
Retracted....
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_115.jpg
...and now extended.

I fastened the slot-in DVD player with velcro. Dont see that everyday right?
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_119.jpg
Layed the IDE cable as tight as possible on the mobo. Also made new cables for the CCF and the DVD, this time designed them to fit snug, and ofc meshed it all.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_120.jpg
This time I wanted a sort-of shield over the mobo, made from mesh. First a test with plain paper.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_121.jpg
Then in AC-Ryan mesh.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_122.jpg
Spraypainted with green UV.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_123.jpg
And fitted.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_124.jpg
And another piece over the DVD player.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_125.jpg
With an UV lamp, it lights up very nice.

Apologies for such late reply, I am currently very busy with a casemod for a competition here in Holland.
Still, I have found a little time in between, to do s very small update. I fastened the arms to the chassis with rivets.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_132.jpg
Here they will be fastened.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_131.jpg
Now a on-off switch and a reset switch.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_133.jpg
With polystyreen I made a small subframe to prevent the knob of sticking out too much.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_134.jpg
And this one for the on-off switch, this one is allowed to stick a bit more out.http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_135.jpg
Fastened with construction-glue.

This triangle piece was planned to cover the switches, but the outer most switch is now in its way and has to be moved.

I like the green EL tape. It goes good with your color scheme. I used some el wire before but I got a really high pitch whine that came from the transformer, so I was curious if the tape did the same thing.
Well, at first..... I DID hear a real high whine when I started the comp... and I thought the same thing as you described. Then I realised I had one of the motors in the arms on. That motor made the whine in my mod. LOL I DID however hear of your problem, with EL tape/high voltage transformers. A friend of mine suggested a rubberband wrapped around the transformer, but I dont know if that is any help to you.

Like I said, I made a mistake with the strips that come on top of the mod. I made them too short!
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_161.jpg
I thought of something that would not only deal with that mistake, but also give it a bit extra.
First I made some small pieces of circuitboard, that will act as supports.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_162.jpg
Then I made these small strips from UV green plexi.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_163.jpg
These will come here on top of the supports.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_164.jpg
With a little glue and a clamp, set to dry.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_165.jpg
When the lights hit the strips, they light up like a xmass tree.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_166.jpg
And here two overview shots, now you see the size of the mod entirely.

Time to give the little beast some legs. These I make from old 2.5" harddrives. These are the discs that sit on top.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_170.jpg
Cut in half.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_171.jpg
Then glued to the mod with constructiekit. ( a little bit too much here )
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_172.jpg
Three times on the left and three times on the right.
http://clan-rag.gameparty.net/bitchie/case/13/STING_173.jpg

Ok, After reviewed the critics, I decided to make three extra limbs for the rear legs.

Now there much more in proportion.

Last to do is to connect them to the chassis and then final testing.

Thanx guys, youre the best !
Ok ok last modification for the rear-legs; by combining two ideas of readers ( thank you for that! ) I made two sections, one thicker sandwich from circuitboard, plexie and circuitboard. And one thinner and smaller one with one circuitboard less.

To bring back the aluminium-look, I used a 3mm strip to hold it all together.

Looks nice with a little light behind it.

I glued the read-write heads to the legs and then sanded the whole smooth.

I just had to modify the large arms with more circuitboard, to get it more "in-sync", agreed?

With the EL-tapes on, in the light you dont see much of them...

Inserted the LED-strip and hooked it up to the HD activity. Connected the laser to a 12 V line.
Ending the story with a small movie, I still can't capture the green laser very good. I sprinkled some saw-dust to show it bettter.
