Finished Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood.

Fun game. I like the western theme and the gunfights. The game did seem a little too easy though even on hard. Too bad the multiplayer is pretty much vacant.

I really enjoyed that one. Now you are going to make me want to play it again. I like the time period and starting in the battle was pretty cool.

I also liked the time period. I wish there were a little more leeway in how you have to resolve some situations. Sometimes the storyline didn't seem to match up. Like having to shoot up the entire town to escape when the brothers would have known that was a sure way to NOT be able to reclaim your home.

Starting in the battle was actually the hardest part of the game. I kept dying throughout the entire battle scene, over and over. Once the story moved into the wild west theme it seemed to get easier. Although it took me about a dozen times to win my first gun fight. After that it took me no more than 2 try's.

Want to hear something funny? I never used bullet time until about 80% of the way through the game and never played the older brother (the one with 2 guns) unless I had to. Even when I played that brother I only used the slo-mo shooting once or twice. I completely forgot about it and had to check the manual as to why the indicator in the top right kept changing and then counting down.

LOL!

EDIT: If you do fire it up again we should duel or try some of the other multiplayer modes.

If I can find it that would be cool. I never played multiplayer with it. Just have to figure out if it was one of the games I traded away. It isn't in my stack so I'm thinking it was.

I actually only used the older brother. I didn't care much for using the younger brother if I remember correctly. I don't remember there being a particular reason for it though.

Just beat Eternal Sonata on the PS3 last night. Took a while as things are getting busy again.

Was a pretty good game. I liked the battle system, but every battle was a tank and spank, so there wasn't any point in using anyone but your most powerful characters, characters that can build up another character, or a healer. I wish there was a bit more strategical battles, or at least ones that made you think a bit more.

The enemy variety was a little lacking. It was mostly palette swaps of the same few creatures. But honestly I didn't really notice, as every enemy pretty much plays the same.

I make it sound bad by reading it but I really did enjoy it for what it was. I kept a save before the final bosses so I can go back and do the bonus dungeon some time along.

Now to choose Valkyria Chronicles, Metal Gear Solid 4, Bayonetta, or Nier for my next adventure. Hmmm. . .

Well this is what Ive spent my last two weeks playing. Have one head-to-head challenge left but damns he tough.

GRID

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1142/grdh.jpg

Game is a few years old but its quite fun and pretty realistic. Only annoying thing I found was the teammate that you hire to race for your team. You'd think a teammate is their to help win, but no, I think he messed me up more than anyone. A few times we would be fighting for first place, then he comes a long and totally hits me and I get wiped out. Like wtf..

Beat Bayonetta on Normal. Pretty fun game. The fiance didn't care for all the sexual overtones, but I really liked the game. It felt a lot like Devil May Cry to me, which after looking it up isn't surprising.

It is a very short game though. But it feels like one of those games you play over and over, not to beat, but to perfect.

I am trying, REALLY hard, to get into Fallout New Vegas but it's boring me half to death - am I missing something (everyone seems to be raving about the game) or have I just gotten too used to fast paced instant gratification with the COD games I've been beating to death recently....

Probably. As a test to confirm, try Fallout 3. ;) I will admit New Vegas doesn't do quite as well in the character-development department. It's still a great game though! :D

Finally finished Bioshock 2.

It was quite funny. I had been playing on my desktop gaming rig and had not played for a while. I got a new laptop last year and have been playing games on that for quite a while. Well I decided to move my gaming rig into a new water cooled case and before I did, I went through the process of backing up all my save game data and all my personal files (very few since that rig is only for gaming). Burned a couple of data CD's for easy access and them started moving the parts. I then loaded Bioshock 2 on the laptop, down loaded the updates and then moved my save games onto the laptop. I fire up the game and continue from where I left off and got about 15 minutes in before I finished the game....

LOL!

I spent hours prepping to play the game only to finish in 15 minutes... hehe

Beat Bayonetta again, this time on Hard. I didn't notice any framerate problems on Normal, but it definitely comes through on Hard.

Now to beat it on infinite climax. Haven't wanted to play through a game this many times in a long time (since the original Ninja Gaiden on xbox), but I enjoy the fighting in this game. I just skip through the cut scenes as I just watched them the first time through.

Anyone risked C&C4? Biggest disappointment since Oblivion for me (yes I didn't love Oblivion, it just wasn't good enough to succeed Morrowind which was perfect!) I also made the unfortunate mistake of buying this game off Ebay for £2.25 so of course it ha already been linked to someone else's account making it unplayable... Luckily I got the guy to provide his details and was able to play all the way through the GDI campaign before the password he gave me stopped working :(

Anyway, I was prepared for it's crappy, non-C&C formula way before I bought it thanks to every single preview and review of the game slating it. Still hard to believe just how much they've managed to ruin such an amazing franchise though. And it's not like they were trying something new for the future either as this was the final game of the series! There is no justification either by the devs or in the game itself as to why all these ridiculous changes have occured.

Red Alert has always been the camp game in the franchise, no.3 was absolutely gushing! So why all of a sudden did they decide that the Tiberium series needed an infusion of gayness as well? I actually ranted about this game on another site so much that it was considered a review by the other members there :p

Anyway, the only thing I found worth doing in this game was grinding for achievements so I'm not too disappointed that I can't complete the Nod campaign. Kane wins in the end of the GDI campaign anyway so what's the point of this game? And how can it be the last game if SPOILER he reopens the gate and invites the aliens to return at the end?

On a side note, I've been trying to play GTA4, Episodes from Liberty City (on PC) but it lags terribly even though the main game is perfectly fine. Google tells me that thousands of people have the same issue but last time I checked there was no solution so I guess that was a waste of money. AND it's another game that requires linking to an account so I had to mess around cracking it ebfore I could even play the damn thing.

To follow the theme, I also bought East India Company as a trade-in from Gamestation (UK store) and that required account verification as well so no dice! What's the deal with all this verification, protection and other various bull? Like it's enough to stop people making illegal copies of it anyway, just takes longer to do (I'm not condoning or supporting this mind you) It's just a cheap trick to force people to buy the game new as once it's been used then it's completely worthless to everyone but the initial buyer.

Bah, rant over...

I have a Dell Studio 15 1555 running an Intel P8600 2.4GHz duel core, 3GB DDR2 RAM and a Radeon HD4570 running at 1366x768 res. The game plays fairly well with everything on medium without AA and at my highest possible res. Sometimes it does lag out though so I knocked everything down to low except car detail just to go a little easier on my aging laptop. I'll have my new PC as soon as they fix Sandybridge anyway so gaming graphics isn't a huge thing for me right now, just as long as I can play the game i'm happy, the cars look pretty nice on medium anyway :D.

Just started playing NFS: Most Wanted again, and remember why I got so frustrated before. Be driving along at 180mph beside a Cobalt that runs headfirst into another car. I keep going at that rate and with 4-5 seconds he's right back beside me. WTF?

I can't stand games that try and increase the difficulty by being cheap. It shouldn't be a valid way to do so. Ya, a Cobalt is going to hit 200mph+ in 2-3 seconds from a dead stop.

Just finished Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Hands down the scariest game I've ever played. Not gonna lie, the game got my heart beating quite a few times. Hmm, not seeing the invite. It is too bad about the account thing. I get it though. I love steam, but it's effectively killed the second hand market for games. The good thing, though, is that more money gets into the hand of the developers instead of a bunch of middle men, and games tend to be cheaper than if purchased in store.

True, also the more money the dev houses get the better their new releases should be. In theory... Still hate the thing though, GFWL as well... EA ruined C&C4 even more by adding a one-time registration too. Have they really convinced themselves that anyone will happily buy that pos new?!

Big day yesterday. Also finished up Nier. I had been near the end for a while. I liked the game. The way the areas in the world were set up had kind of a Zelda like feel.

The story was interesting. Different. And then it puked the story all over you at the end. It tells you about files that explain things, during one of the final cut scenes. I did not read them at that time. I didn't even know the game was giving you files that explained things along the way, until that point. I wasn't going to break up the flow of the ending by stopping to read them. Just seemed awkward. But after finishing the game and being confused as hell I read the synopsis and such. The story would have been really really cool, if they had just conveyed it to the reader better. Shoot, if they had done the black screen white text before the credits that would have been fine too.

I will probably play it again, but I'm not sure I'm fond of them leaving things out of the story to put them in subsequent playthroughs. I'm all for finding ways to keep people playing your game after beating it, but I'm not sure about leaving bits of the story out. Then again, maybe it doesn't work until you already know a little about it. I guess I won't know until I play it again. Which I will, eventually.

Interesting game even if they dump a pile of plot twists without adequate explanation in the narrative on you at the end of the game.

Wow, I have to say, I am impressed with Crysis 2. 16 hours of gameplay (only losing maybe ~20 minutes to a couple deaths) and I'm not done yet! Granted, I have a much slower method of playing than some people...snipe + cloak + silencers  ..but even if you did it run-and-gun, it would probably be at least half that. That is quite impressive for a modern FPS. :D And the story's actually not bad either! Not on par with, say, the Fallout games, but compared to the normal fare for FPSs, it's practically Shakespeare. :P

There were bits I liked better in the original that were sacrificed because of its console compatibility, but the graphics excellent, the gameplay was very enjoyable and I think about as versatile as Crysis, the nanosuit was managed much better than in Crysis, imo, the story was actually pretty well done, and actually mattered to gameplay (unlike in Crysis), and ~18.5 hours of gameplay....that's phenomenal!

Bioshock, I have always avoided using a keyboard and mouse to play anything other than simple point and click adventure games but I know that you can't beat a mouse for accuracy in shooters so I bought a Fang keypad and Logitech G9 gaming mouse and have played Bioshock through all difficulty levels, it's a brilliant game with great game physics and you can lay some wicked traps, you can buy it for just £3.99 on amazon now which is a bargain if you've never played it and don't worry about DRM limitations they have been removed now and the fix has been made server-side when you first activate the game, I'm a keyboard/mouse convert from years of consoles and have got Crysis waiting on the shelf when I've eventually had enough Bioshocking 8)

I'm playing Crysis (the first one) and it took me a while to figure out that really the only way to play is stealth! Once I had that in mind then I've been really enjoying the game and am now about half way through it but I absolutely HATED the level with tanks (in which the player also has a tank) I cursed my way through the entire mission as the tank v tank situation is a joke, it's as if they took a chunk of gameplay from a completely different title. Why put an elite commando with a nanosuit capable of cloaking in a big ol' tank and have him charge into enemy lines of more than a dozen tanks of their own? Honestly didn't enjoy a single moment of the level till they finally ran out of tanks and I could go stealth again. I even resorted to stealth for the last few armour units by crawling up to them and placing explosives, was a real chore though... I'm hoping the remainder of the game returns to the earlier levels where the player is rewarded for the use of stealth.

I just completed Crysis... Wow am I glad I got it cheap... The game has essentially 11 levels, not too many right? Well I could have played a much better game if it had only got 8 levels... The one in the tanks I've already mentioned and it was ****e. Then later there's another one in a VTOL thing which is similarly crap. The suit may as well not exist on this level as from start to finish you're stuck in a poorly armed aircraft with no maneouverability and pointless secondary objectives. Another mission doesn't even receive a satisfactory in-game explanation for why it exists at all. Of course when dealing with aliens there's bound to be some kind of bio-mechanical mothership/complex type level but in this case it served as nothing more than a time-wasting, frustrating maze... The enemies appear to be some kind of ghosts or gelatinous slimer-like creatures, there is no real purpose to any of the level and it is absolutely linear in every single sense. Add to that it's dark, repetitive and confusing and it would have been much better left out of the game completely...

Add to these 3 wasted levels the fact that the last level culminates with a BUGGED BOSSFIGHT! Yes that's right, they didn't playtest the last mission... As always it's a very 1990's console 'shoot the big boss here then here then here for a remarkable chain reaction' scenario but in this case... Well it just doesn't work. After I had trouble getting my 'supergun' to do what it was meant to do I resorted to a walkthrough to explain how I am supposed to achieve a lock on. I found nothing helpful as it is apparently very simple. So I played again, and again, and again... Until a quick google of my problem revealed literally dozens of posts on various sites by hundreds of gamers with identical problems.

That isn't even the worst part of this sad story. The worst part is that I bought the 'maximum edition'. That means I have to play through a whole second game! Please can somebody tell me that Crysis Warhead is an improvement on the original???

88, What's no.2 like? Any pointless missions? Game-breaking bugs?

Beat Portal 2. Really really really really good game. Really Really short, again. I recommend playing it for sure, but I'm not sure it was worth the $45 pre-order cost.

I quite enjoyed Crysis myself, even though it did have the few pointless levels. If you know the story line they really do make sense and the situation is expanded on in Warhead where you play as an entirely different character.

The original Crysis took me about 6 -8 hours to complete on medium (with some stuffing around), Warhead around the same. Warhead also features a lot of fixes on game play issues,

Me too. The tank level was a bit annoying though, mainly because the tank was so hard to control and would blow up if you took it too fast off any ledges... :whistler:

IIRC, Warhead is very similar to the parts of Crysis that you liked, Munty. ;) IE, no alien spaceships and no tanks or flying. I can't comment on the bugs, though, as I never experienced any in any of the three games.

I quite enjoyed both Crysis and Crysis Warhead, but imo Crysis 2 is a much better game. The story is better, the suit controls are a lot more intuitive, and there's a lot more of it there. It took me just over 18 hours to beat it. I'd say that's pretty good value. :D My personal favorite change was in the suit controls. They made it a lot easier to actually use all the functions of the suit. Instead of having different 'modes', for 'speed', you just hold down shift while running, for 'strength', for jumping or hitting you just hold down the key longer, and to steady shots you just hold down shift. Then, for cloak you just hit another button (I forget what it defaulted to and I think I changed it). Made for awesome sniping. Just cloak, get in position, line up the (head)shot, then uncloak-shoot-cloak really fast. That way, you don't lose all your suit energy when you shoot, and even when they do realize they're getting shot at, they can't see who's shooting them.

Like The boy 4rm oz mentioned, though, with the Crysis games you do actually have to pay attention to the plot if you want the game to make sense. Most of the crop of FPSs out there these days are pretty devoid of plot, and even when it is there, it usually has little to nothing to do with the actual missions. That's actually one of the reasons I really like the Crysis games. Yes, the plot in Crysis and Warhead wasn't quite as well done as I would have liked, but it was there, it was internally consistent, and it affected the gameplay. And that's a good thing, imo. So, I guess if that's what you didn't like about Crysis, you'll really hate Crysis 2, because they made the plot even more connected to the gameplay. Personally, I loved it. :D

Portal 2 was pretty awesome, finished the game up last night. Took me 10 hrs to beat singleplayer, a couple levels really had me stumped for awhile. I only payed $15 for the game (Amazon sale + giftcard), so I definitely got my moneys worth and I haven't even tried coop yet.

I've been playing Assassins Creed Brotherhood off and on for the last couple weeks. Enjoying so far, but school has been keeping me busy. Hard to believe, but sometimes it feels like there is too much stuff to do lol.

Purchased Bulletstorm today from the D2D, only played for about an hour but it looks interesting. I noticed a lot of people say the game was fun just not worth the $60 price tag, so for $20 something, it was hard to pass up.

To distract myself from trying to upgrade for f@h, even though the fiancee gave the thumbs up, I started playing Demon's Souls again. Completed the game on the character I was using before.

Such an awesome game. From when you first start, to when you come back after a while, it gives such a great feeling when you get creamed every time within 30 seconds of the level to when you start to figure things out (again) and just walk right through everything.

Can't wait for Dark Souls.

Glad I'm not the only one who saw some levels as unnecessary :p And I must agree that so far Warhead seems to be a slightly more sensible game. I was devastated to be put in control of a hovercraft for one level though, didn't like that at all... No weapons at all but virtually impossible to damage. Add to that the fact that the guy you are chasing will never actually get away and there's only one very long, windy, confusing route to reach the finish... I just got out and ran the whole way in the end :D

I'm loving the clock-snipe-cloak thing but I must say it does suck in the originals that you lose all your energy when shooting. Obviously you'd want to uncloak and fire so you're able to immediately recloak but as a player I certainly don't want to do it manually as you put yourself at risk a lot longer. Sounds like no.2 will be an improvement in that area...

Like The boy 4rm oz mentioned, though, with the Crysis games you do actually have to pay attention to the plot if you want the game to make sense.
I agree, a game with a plot is a very good thing. Blowing stuff up is fun and all but it's more fun with direction. Honestly though I don't have a great deal of good to say about the plot in the original but I haven't finished Warhead yet.

I find that the length of the original campaign is rather lacking and if anything it should be a chapter of the campaign not the entirety of it. I think the allocation of manpower is also very odd at times. One level you're a lone commando then you're being supported by tanks, aircraft and fullscale marine platoons before being once again alone in the very next level...

The focus of the story is of course the fact that there is an alien vessel on earth (or building, I never understood which) which is switching on and attacking everyone. That said, we never learn anything about them, their origins, their arrival on the planet, presence elsewhere in the universe, strengths, weaknesses, what they are (not carbon based that's for sure!) and wtf their vehicles and weapons are. How can a game include such a detailed alien race with so much to offer and then fail to disclose even the tiniest scrap of information about them?

To me, this is a game that was never finished so of course there was going to be a Crysis 2. if it sold well... And that's kind of the key isn't it. They weren't really thinking about the players but about future financial projections. Let's cut the game short and send it out then we can make another one if it sells or cut our losses if it doesn't.

I agree it's nice to see a plot in a FPS but I disagree that it was a good one. IT all comes down to aliens attacking earth after all and that's pretty much every FPS out there except the US special forces vs. communist adversaries setting. Oh no wait, it had that too...

Completed Crysis Warhead and I have to say it's an improvement on the first. Given that I did enjoy the first one for the most part it's fairly obvious that I've liked this one too! There was the hovercraft mission which was completely pointless and one rather redundant mission which is spent travelling through a mine but even these are less pointless than the tank and VTOL missions from the first one.

Additionally the PC is far more memorable and actually has a personality of his own which is a distinct improvement over the original. Nomad was a very bland rank and file elite soldier whereas Psycho is far deeper and easier to relate to. There are even moments in the cutscenes where you see huge chunks of his character emerging and the inclusion of a backstory between him and O'Neill (an NPC in Warhead) is another nice touch that adds further dimension to the story if not the plot.

Being a parallel to Crysis there were no surprises but that was expected and I think the plot was handled pretty damn well with some good missions along the way although maybe the game could've been longer, a problem in the original too...

So what about Crysis 2? I'm told it's an improvement on both of the originals so I'm inclined to think I'd enjoy that even more. It's nice to see a franchise that seems to better itself with each release, I just hope they don't go too far...

Munty

Of course that's not what I meant :p My point is, Crysis is improving with each release as the changes being made are good. A lot of franchises will eventually go too far by changing too much or changing the wrong thing however, thus creating a game which is a significant step backwards when compared to it's predecessors. What I'm saying is, Crysis = good, Warhead = better, Crysis2 = very good, Crysis 3 = crap. As a hypothetical example ;)

I was thinking about Far Cry actually after I finished Warhead yesterday. Is that worth a play too? I'm not usually a huge fan of FPS but I did enjoy my time with Crysis for the most part and I remember Far Cry being one of the big names when it was new. Did it live up to the hype or will I be a bit disappointed if I move from Crysis back to that?

I loved FarCry 2. Being able to light grass on fire to smoke out enemies was awesome fun. I also liked the self heal mini cut scenes where your character pulls bullets from his/her wounds with pliers. The story in FarCry 2 is good and dependent on the character you choose and the buddies you keep alive the game is never the same the second time around.

Yup...nothing to do with each other and they were made by different studios. Ubisoft (who made Far Cry 2) claimed that it was the "true sequel" to Far Cry, but since nothing about them is similar, I'm not really really sure where they're trying to pull that from..

That aside, both are good games, imo. Completely different, but both are good.

I got both FarCry's in the mail about a week ago and put down the original after a matter of minutes... A lot of reasons but basically I just think it's a bit crap :p FarCry 2 looks a lot better but I haven't played it yet so I'm basing that on the boxshots and manual (plus the map - I love wen games include maps :D)

Other new titles included Dead Space which I LOVE and have already started to play through for the second time! I completed the oldish Star Wars Republic Commando today and it has a lot of good points but does have a few flaws as well. A sequel is well overdue though and the original gameplay with some next gen graphics and a longer campaign with co-op/multiplayer options would be just incredible.

I also got hold of the original Starcraft (as I realised I currently don't have a copy!) and Warcraft 3 which I'm currently playing. Not a patch on no.2 and the move from isometric to 3D has been implemented appaulingly imo. It's a cartoony game with an awful story that I just don't care about. To make matters worse they've added 2 new races (often a sign of desperation in sequels!) and neither of them are any good. Clicking on the sheep doesn't even make them explode anymore... So disappointing...

Metro2033 and STALKER Call of Pripyat finish off my latest shopping spree but the latter still hasn't arrived yet :( The other game I got was a copy of Left4Dead2 so I could play it on my own Steam account after previously buying an already activated copy (the guy gave me his account though so now my mate uses it and we can play together :D

So far, FarCry is a fail, Replublic Commando is a pass, Warcraft 3 is a fail and Dead Space is a tremendous pass. Metro2033, STALKER, Farcry2 and Starcraft still need judging though of course the iconic Starcraft shouldn't struggle to satisfy me after a quick revisit :D

Having played both Farcry games through more than once I have to disagree on that count. The original had a MUCH better storyline and the environments and enemies were a lot more varied. The graphics in Farcry 2 are orders of magnitude better, obviously, but for sheer gameplay and fun I have to say the original was a lot better in my book.

I agree. Granted, they're very different types of games, with Fary Cry being more of an open-world FPS with Far Cry 2 being more of a GTA-style RPG. IMO the story is better (more developed, etc) in Far Cry than in Far Cry 2, but that has less to do with the story in Far Cry being particularly good and more to do with the story in Far Cry 2 being just plain awful. :P That being said, I did enjoy playing through both of them. OOC, Munty, was there anything in particular that put you off Far Cry? Just wondering since, like bOb mentioned, it does have a pretty wide variety of environments and enemies..the things you dislike might go away later in the game.

I honestly made it mere moments into the game before it tipped my frustration meter (sadly that's not too hard but it does take a lot to make me put a game down this quickly!)

I didn't expect any more graphics wise than I got as it's an oldish title by now. Gameplay is also not too bad and the binoculars are a particularly handy tool.

On the flipside, it was the actual level design itself that put me off very fast. Running through sewers, fine. Using machete to kill stupid occupants of small outpost as they filed through the same door their friend just died in, fine. Being met on a beach by 6 troops and two vehicles, fine (as I had a vehicle too and I MGd em all down :p) But having a rocket firing, fast moving patrol boat far enough off shore that it's nigh impossible for me to hit it yet close enough that it is able to hit me no matter where I try to hide? Well that was my first turn off and it took me ages to kill the guy firing at me with the crappy gun you start out with...

The next and final hurdle I had to overcome (made worse by the fact the rockets had nearly killed me, health doesn't regenerate and there are no medkits anywhere to be seen) was an abandonned aircraft carrier crawling with troops packing MGs. I think there's something like 10 enemies, one of whom has a rocket launcher and another 2 are in a boat. All are heavily armed and miles away from me and my crap gun.

Now, before it's said that I gave up because it's too hard, that's not quite true. I managed to kill all of these enemies the first time I played this part of the level and then I moved to the carrier. I jumped down a small ledge and died instantly... We're talking 6 feet or so...

After a shaky start with a rocket boat and heavily armed aircraft carrier I simply figured that this was setting the scene for things to come and I decided to cut my losses there and then. Sure I could've played further in and in time I will, right now though I have so many other, better games to be playing I don't want to waste my time with it.

Flame away :p

If I'm thinking of the right spot, I think that's just a "you weren't supposed to go down here and there's no way up so we just put an instant-death zone at the bottom" situation.

The difficulty and enemy AI were definitely two of the aspects that they had to work on balancing after Far Cry...as Yahtzee put it:

While the scenery was expansive and pretty, you couldn't spend much time admiring it before finding your body attempting to occupy the same space as ten million billion bullets fired by enemies with telescopic x-ray vision who could see you hiding in a bush 9,000 yards away

Fortunately, once I got my hands on the sniper rifle, I could also see and kill the enemies from 9,000 yards away.

Thank God it's not just me! I was expecting some less than generous responses given that I clearly gave up on this game very early on :D I'd love a sniper rifle, it'd almost certainly save the game for me even at this early point. I'm guessing it'll be some time before that's an option though won't it?

EDIT : Hey I've just been reading some faqs and walkthroughs and such and they all mention medpacks you can pick up but so far I haven't seen any... I passed one med box thing in a hut very early on in the first little hamlet but I couldn't use it as I didn't need to and I couldn't carry it either. Not having carryable health items is one of my big problems with this game (especially with non-regenerative health) so can someone clear this up for me as it may help...

Yep, that was the medkit. And no, you can't carry any, just have to limp along damn near dead and hope you find one. And yes I recall that $&*(@ boat very clearly. I HATE those boats, but that one was the worst. When you DO get the sniper rifle it's a lot of fun picking them off the boats from the shore. :D (A little bit that I was happy to see was just as fun in Far Cry 2)

05-11-2011, 10:56 AM
Well the good news is I've given the game a revisit and cleared the first three levels with minimal frustration :) I'm still not particularly impressed with the level design but there are becoming fewer suicidal moments like the first rocket boat...

On the first reload (just before the carrier) I managed to take out all of the opposition without a single shot fired in return which was nice. I think there were only 8 in the end though, not the 10 I thought there were...

Anyway the next level on the ship went fairly well but these enemies are in some pretty tricky places and I kept getting clipped from the gantries as I ddin't know where they were shooting from!

I now have a sniper rifle but only 10 rounds which is disappointing but I guess I'll just save them up till I really need them as the M4 is doing a pretty good job right now anyway.

I'm still by no means being won over by this game but at least I can play through it now and give it a fighting chance. It's going to be fighting for play-time with a few other games I'm already playing but with 3 levels done and 17 to go I guess it shouldn't take me too long anyway. We'll see hey :p

Just a query for those who've played this game. If you were taking some american bird on a trip in your yacht when it got blown up with a rocket launcher and you nearly died before being washed up on an island where you hear people discussing how important it is that you die... What would you do when you found yourself a new boat? Would you really follow the instructions of some doctor who just happened to leave a radio right near the point you entered the sewers?

I'd be on my way home after the end of level 2 personally. To hell with the broad and to hell with the island! Worst story ever :p

It does beg the question though doesn't it, at what point do you turn tail and run home? When your vessel is destroyed by a rocket? When mercenaries set out to kill you? when you unearth a devious plot by a mad scientist? When you start fighting with mutants? Hmm... For me it would be the rocket...

Finished watching all 153 episodes of Dragonball a few days ago so I'd call that about a fortnight :p

Also been playing Warcraft 3 and hating every minute of it. I posted up a rant of my feeling s here for anyone who's curious as to why... http://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/Warcraft-III-t8936.html

I installed Metro2033 to follow up this disappointment and sadly wasn't wowed the way I was hoping to be. Right from the get go it had issues with loading the game (which are apparently very common) then there were driver incompatabilities (again very common) which forced me to drop it down from very high settings to just high and it made a BIG difference to quality. Again there is a link to this rant here > http://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=6649&view=findpost&p=104397

One of my big problems with this game is that there is no really useful display of health (or even ammo unless you're fighting) instead you have to check your watch to see how close to being dead you are. On mentioning how stupid this seemed (due to stopping mid firefight) someone linked this image so its clearly not just me.
http://www.pressstarttoplay.net/comic/comics/060313.jpg

I never had a problem with Metro 2033 stability, so I can't help you with that. I never really found the health meter to be an issue, tbh. I was too busy enjoying the atmosphere and interesting weapons and mechanics. :whistler: ..oh, and trying not to get myself killed...

Munty

lol well that's kind of the problem it's posing for me 88. Don't know when you played it but if you remember the beginning you fight a room full of bandits quite early on. I think there must be 6-8 of them at least as it took me a while to kill them all! I had trouble with it because every time I stuck my head out I got hit by a magic homing bullet but I never knew how badly I'd been hurt. The screen goes red and there's a heartbeat as well when things go pearshaped but I still had no idea what health I had left. Miraculously I managed to get through this part of the game without dying on my first try but it's pure luck that I didn't die because I honestly don't understand how I'm supposed to know what my health is... As far as I can tell its either a green light which is good or a red one which is bad right? lol that helps doesn't it! Another thing that's bugged me about the beginning of the game is the massive amount of prescripted events that take complete control over the character. There have already been 2 or 3 occasions on which I've been thrown out of a vehicle or similar by these mutants and I was convinced that it was game over and I'd died but in fact I hadn't and it was just part of the game. I don't get it... There was also a point where I was told to tap E but I don't know why, I guess the monster was trying to eat my face or something, who knows!

Anyway I do want to play this game so stability is the key. Did you use max settings when you played as a lot of people (ie. not just me!) have had varying issues on max. For me the game would crash after about 1 minute on very high settings but on just high it was stable for a long time. Until it crashed again... It's as if the game is actually consuming my GPU and then running out of memory or something odd but it's not just crashing the game it's the whole system. Nothing else is now or ever has given me similar problems...

x88x
05-18-2011, 10:31 AM
Yeah, I was running it on full settings.

As for the quick-time-events, there are a lot of them in the first 20 minutes or so, but after that I don't remember any. I actually never finished the game...I should probably get around to doing that some time... I don't remember the health system exactly, tbh, but I don't remember having any issues with it. *shrugs*

Now playing FarCry 2 having put down Metro2033 till I can figure out how to get it running properly! Got to say I'm really enjoying it as an open-world freeroaming FPS. I get the feeling I'll be playing it for a long time as there's an awful lot to do but that's a good thing right?!

It takes me back to days of playing Mercenaries on the old PS2 which I also loved and in many ways they're quite similar games. All that's different is the tech levels essentially as Mercenaries was a pretty standard Gulf War sort of engagement whereas FarCry2 is more of an internal African Conflict.

It's not even vaguely related to FarCry so I don't know why they gave it the same name. Personally the original (I know its different dev houses) still isn't doing anything for me wheras this one is doing almost everything for me. I'm generally not a huge FPS fan, despite my recent purchase of maybe 7 FPS... But open world titles like Mercenaries, FarCry 2 and the STALKER trilogy are totally my kind of games and I'm enjoying every minute of this one.

As a bit of a heads up, does anyone know what's so buggy in this game as everyone everywhere has it down as one of the buggiest tittles in the world but I've been ok so far. Just would like to know what I have in store :D

I'll be interested to see how long it holds your attention. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it and finished it, but it gets a bit repetitive after a while....what with most of the missions being essentially the same...

I'll let you know 88 but yesterday I scouted 20/57~ outposts and collected almost 60 diamonds out of 221 (so probably about half of the ones in the Northern sector? I've also done 4 jobs for the gunshops and another 3 assassination ones so I've made quite a dent in the 'background' of the game.

That said I've only done 2 missions in the main storyline so I figure by doing all the diamonds and outposts en-route to my next main objective there should only be a few things to pick up at the end of the map before I move south.

Guess what I'm going to do now? See you all later lol

Ok I need some advice on this game from someone else who's played it and I think here is as good a place to start looking as any! 88, you've played it, lend me a hand would ya :D

So first off... Big Ol' Spoiler alert!
So I've finished the main missions in the northern province and reached the part where I have to 'choose' whether to defend the church or Mike's bar. I chose to save my buddies but after they and I all died I figured it wouldn't have mattered which I chose as it's a scripted death fest anyway...

But now I realise that my best buddy (Josep) is dead and I've only done something like 4/12 buddy missions so far. I guess I make a new buddy down south but I think I've missed out anyway as it says in the wiki that Josep will give you 2 extra missions 'Fuel the Violence' and 'The Lemon Beater' neither of which I've done.

If he's now dead surely that means I've missed the chance to do them doesn't it? I haven't saved yet though so I guess I could go back. Would mean doing lots again later though :( Any thoughts appreciated, I really want 100%!
Spoiler over, thanks in advance for any advice :p

I have played the game also with multiple characters and as far as I know each buddy has a few missions exclusive to them. So you losing your current buddy shouldn't effect you getting bonus missions from another.

Thanks Oz, I figured it out in the end and had to reload from just before I started the last mission of the first part :( It's the missions in Mike's bar which are the buddy quests (I've noticed the icon there but never visited for the work!)

Anyway I'm not at the point where I've done all the assassination jobs (cellular antennas) all the available gunshop jobs, all but the last main mission for the area and 5 of the eight buddy quests. The sixth one I'll do later but for now I have to stop playing as the sun is in such a place that I can't see enough in game anymore lol

I'm puzzled about how I can get hold of the last two buddy jobs though as they need to come from the guy who was until recently my 'rescue buddy'. That means he wasn't ever in the bar offering jobs as he was off in the wilderness waiting to save my ass I guess. I've now managed to swap rescue buddies by doing jobs for one of the other buddies which put her 'history' above my old guys. When I go to the bar now it's her in the widerness but... he hasn't come back yet...

I need him to be in the bar in order to do those last jobs and I'm nearly out of stuff to do in the north now! I've unlocked all the safehouses, scouted all the outposts and found all but 14 diamonds! When the sun has gone I can do all of that tonight and leave the game ready to go to the southern province next time I load it up. But I can't GO to the next province until I've done this guys mission so what next?

/\That, iirc. So, you won't be able to get the bonus missions from the one, but you will get other unique ones from others, later.

Just turned up something else that's puzzled me. You know how I thought I was so nearly done up north? Turns out I only have 4 buddies when there should be 6! So not only do I need to find these extra 2 buddies (I already have intel which should lead me to them!) I then presumably have an extra 2 missions for each of them. On top of that, apparently only 4 people can spawn in the bar at any one given time so that'll be an issue too when I have all six. I don't really want to kill any of them after all :(

The boy 4rm oz
05-20-2011, 10:30 PM
The extra 2 buddies are found when you go down south if I recall correctly. Oh and be careful. When you go down south there is a little intermediary "joining" landscape, you will find a few diamonds there. This all happens after the incident at Mike's Bar and you are running.

Well I have played about 20 hours of Assassin's Creed II over the week (since Saturday last week) and am probably 75% of the way through the missions with all the Armour and weapons (minus one). I have nearly all the art work and only about 30/100 feathers. I will be moving over to the final area later this afternoon but for now, homework calls :(.

Thanks Oz I found the last 2 up north so there are 6 up top and I'm not sure how many extra down south. I think another 6 but looking at a guide I found maybe only 4?

Anyway I've now done everything up top except the last 2 buddy missions as the last buddy won't spawn in the bar (I have to kill my rescue buddy to be able to do these which is a MAJOR design flaw with the game...) then I just have 4 more diamonds to collect and the top map is finished and its on to the south part! Can't help thinking it's a bit stupid that you can't ever come back north but meh, can't be helped I guess.

Thanks for the info with the desert, there are 4 diamonds there which luckily are marked on my map ;) So I should be on the southern part very soon but I may take a break from the game after that as I've been really cramming in playtime on it lately which can't be healthy ;)

No, that would be a design decision, not a design flaw. Just because you don't like the way they made the game doesn't mean they screwed it up. :P

Considering that your buddies do die you get to do the missions eventually.

No, that would be a design decision, not a design flaw. Just because you don't like the way they made the game doesn't mean they screwed it up. :P

But if it makes it impossible to obtain 100% completion then it's a flaw surely? I have to watch my character do enough questionable things as it is, I shouldn't be forced to murder someone I resued immediately after they've just saved my life simply to make room in a half empty bar for another 'buddy' to give me missions. Should I?

Anyway it's screwed either way as I've booted up this morning and done absolutely everything there is to do yet I can't move on as the final buddy won't spawn in the bar... I got myself killed, shot my rescue buddy in the head then went to the bar but nothing changed. Went to my safehouse and accepted the new character as my rescue buddy but still nothing changed. Went to the bar and now there are only 3 people there (best buddy and 2 others whose missions I've done) the fourth space is now open as the new rescue buddy is out in the wilderness and my previous acquaintance is dead.

Nothing happens though, that last person never arrives no matter what I do. I've spent a few hours finishing up today AFTER killing the guy and accepting the new buddy, expecting it to eventually sort itself out. It doesn't... I then killed my new rescue buddy and accepted the next one. Rested in my shack for several days, still no change. There are now only 2 people in the bar!

So what can I do? I can't finish this mission later because the buddy will be dead and I'll have missed out on 2/40 side missions. Bye-bye 100% completion, on a game that will have taken 40 hours to play through. Don't get me wrong I'm still really enjoying it but like it or not this is a flaw, not a decision...

The boy 4rm oz

When I played through I only got my buddies at triggered events so it may be possible that you have missed the trigger or completed a mission before it was meant to be completed. Either way even if you do travel to the south area you can come back at any time and may find your buddy then. Unless they have changed something in a patch this was the way it was for me.

I had to reload to an earlier game but I figured it out. Basically there are 6 buddies in the North and you're only guaranteed to meet 2 of them (maybe 3) The other three are prisoners of the enemy soldiers in various locations... Now once you go south you'll NEVER see any of those buddies again, regardless of whether you left them locked up or if you let them out, if you did their jobs or not. Hence my desperation to do the missions before leaving the north...

Turns out the bar only has space for 4 of your six buddies, as I already mentioned. Your best buddy is always there and your rescue buddy is never there. That means in order to do missions for your rescue buddy you need to either kill your best buddy so rescue gets a promotion, otherwise improve relatiosn with your rescue buddy until they outrank your best buddy and replace them, or as I did improve relations with another buddy by doing their jobs until rescue buddy is demoted.

In this way I got jobs done for best buddy and the other 3 I'd already found, then with one space in the bar I went and rescued the fifth and did their missions. The mistake I made with the sixth seems to have been rescuing them before killing my rescue buddy and accepting the new one (therefore making space in the bar) By doing it the other way round and killing my rescue buddy first it seems to have forced the newly rescued buddy to immediately warp to the bar and I got the missions done :)

Working on the second map now having completed the north and central parts completely (though I still need to unlock one more underground location in the north if that's counted) I'm not as keen on the southern map as the northern one so far but I'm sure it'll get better as I find my footing over the course of some missions. Big annoyance so far though is an enemy wielded mortar which is practically impossible to track down! I googled the location of a guy who was giving me trouble in the end and chopped him up with my machete as that's how angry it had made me searching for him while trying not to explode :p Enemy cars and boats have 'nade launchers in the south too which is great when I have them but particularly challenging when the bad guys do :D

You can also upgrade your jeeps using diamonds that you collect so they have the grenade launcher too, as long as you get the jeep from a safe house it will be equipped with whichever weapon you unlock.

Aye, having plenty of diamonds from doing so much up north I've got a repair manual for the defender (is SOOO worth it!) and all of the accessories (camo, ammo belts, syringe pack, etc) I haven't spent much on weapons yet but I have an uzi for a sidearm and a very nice scoped assault rifle for primary (forget the name) It's a shame the sniper rifle doesn't fit in the specialist weapon slot as I wouldn't really call it a primary one. I'd rather carry that than a mortar/rocket launcher/flamethrower etc. but I want something for automatic fire too with a little more punch than my uzi. Perfect world I'd have an uzi, my assault rifle and a sniper rifle on me at all times. Invicnible ;)

As for the mounted weapons I'm not entirely sure when they upgrade but it's something to do with mission progress (when you get that 'safehouse upgraded' message for doing main missions your best buddies way) In the north you get the safehouse vehicles upgraded to the 50 cal MG which is personally my favourite over the grenade launchers anyway. I believe the GL upgrade for your safehouse upgrades is the last one you get but there are plenty already being driven around by the baddies so I just use theirs! Personally I think that's a bad upgrade as it's impossible to engage at close quarters with a GL so I'd rather keep the 50 cal :(

Anyway I managed to do all the gunshop missions yesterday and have a few more assasination jobs before they're all out of the way too. I have 3 out of 5 buddies in the south so I'll be doing their missions next before moving onto finish the main story. I'm not using maps for the south area (yet) as like I said, the game marks down which ones you've found as you go. That means it'll be easy to fill in the gaps later. For now I'm just securing safehouses and scouting outposts as I go, picking up diamonds every so often when I see the blip. Already found about 20 more so a lot of them are quite easy anyway. By roadsides, shacks, etc...

lol, I know what you bean, BoB. I can understand shooting for more realism by actually requiring regular maintenance on your weapons or something, but am I seriously to believe that all of the armed people running around there have guns that are such wrecks that they fall to pieces after firing 20 rounds? :P

Munty
05-22-2011, 12:01 PM
I third that motion, but it is of course in place for gameplay reasons more than realism I think... Once you buy a weapon from the gunshop you can get it brand new from the armoury next door forever. That means you can essentially trade it in every time you pass one in the future and never have your weapons wear out. The enemy guns are crap because (I think) the designers didn't want us to be able to get hold of good weapons too early in the game. For example, the gun I'm using now for my primary (the scoped assault rifle) I found on a corpse before I was able to buy it.

If there was no reliability factor, or if I was able to repair it forever, then I would have been able to have that gun earlier than they want me too. Plus there are probably about 10 gunshop missions in all and it took till the 9th one to unlock this particular gun so by getting it early I would've been essentially cheating the game out of some of it's vast potential of content ;)

I can't believe I managed to not mention the fact that I managed my 100% game of FarCry 2 :D But I did! I continued enjoying the game right to the end but the little niggly bits of gameplay that had existed for the whole experience did gradually get more and more annoying.

Rapidly respawning enemies (literally 20 new badguys 3 minutes after you last passed through an area) the inability to jump or climb if the ledge is above knee-height... Honestly there wasn't much beyond those issues which bugged me about this game though, and despite people constantly pointing out how buggy it is I only recieved one CTD throughout more than 30 hours of gameplay so I guess I got lucky for once!

Anyway I used maps to get the diamonds but the rest was easy enough, though it got pretty repetitive on more than one occasion due to fairly limited mission types. Travel was ok, though driving was made particularly difficult thanks to the immediate respawn of enemies. I found myself taking the bus 9 times out of 10 to avoid patrols which would simply add time to an already inexplicably long journey.

I never found the actual gameplay itself to be too difficult but there were still moments where I jumped in over my head and had a bit of a struggle on my hands. The buddy system is great in that they'll come to your rescue when you're incapacitated. It's a nice feature and it was done really well.

All the little animations like reloading, healing, switching seats in a vehicle and clearing jammed weapons were great and they added just the right amount of realism to a genre that can be very wishy-washy.

The story was sadly the real let down with this game (quite a blow after 30 hours of gaming!) and the character never has any real choices to make, nor a personality of his own at any point in the game. The characters you deal with are similarly 2-dimensional with the repeating pattern of 'work for a, work for b, kill boss a, kill boss b, move to c and d' pretty much continuing throughout the entire game.

The purpose of this game is to kill an arms dealer (and therefore stop the flow of guns and the war itself) yet every mission that you do is intended to directly fuel the flames of the conflict. Our protaganist has no capability to turn down a job, even if it means killing the boss of the good guys who he's just finished helping. Put simply, he's an idiot. He's betrayed by everyone in the game at some point yet the ending is completely unexpected given the developments to this point.

So yes, great experience, endless amounts of fun to be had, great replayability, but lousy story and totally anti-climatic ending. Still I enjoyed it for 30 hours so I can forgive that the ending sucked I guess... Not sure what's next on my to-do list but I'm playing a bit of online Freelancer now which has long been a staple of my gaming diet :D

Revenge of the Titans is fun, but I didn't realize at the beginning that things like money carried over from level to level, so screwing up at the beginning can make the game literally impossible later on.

Personally I loved FEAR and FEAR 2. Never played the other one though...

While they are both severely lacking in the plot and atmosphere areas, both FEAR and FEAR 2 I think really nailed the gameplay aspect. There's just something about the way the firearms work in those games that really clicks with me.

I'm playing Revenge of the Titans and some other stuff, Magicka and Spiral Knights.

Revenge of the Titans is fun, but I didn't realize at the beginning that things like money carried over from level to level, so screwing up at the beginning can make the game literally impossible later on.

Spiral Knights is fun to play when I'm watching a movie or TV show windowed on my computer as well. It's pretty mindless.

Magicka is sorta fun. I'll have to play some more to see if I really love it.

I saw your comment about Revenge of the Titans and I was like "what game is that". After further investigation its basically a sweet tower defense game. I love it. Some parts are pretty hard but you get used to it.

Also Magicka is really really fun. I had to take a break though because it gets really hard when your alone. It really is a team game.

Yeah...for the first playthough.. IDK if I'm just incredibly jaded or what, but after the first playthrough of FEAR, none of the FEAR games freak me out anymore. They rely entirely too much on the "Holy ****, I didn't think that would happen!" reaction....and then proceed to do the same thing over and over... Playing Rocksmith. Pretty sweet to have a game that lets you play any electric guitar. Definitely a fun way to keep motivated and keep practicing.

It can be a bit frustrating when you finally get a section of the song and it immediately ups the difficulty. I wish it let you play it a few times all the way through before doing that, to instill that feeling of accomplishment, and not go all Demon's/Dark Souls punishing on your arse, lmfao.

billygoat333

I was wondering about that game, how well it would work. Functions ok?

NightrainSrt4
11-08-2011, 08:49 AM
Seems so. I was never anything more than a beginner, and it's been a few years since I picked up my guitar, but yeah, it seems to work pretty well.

When I hit the right note it picks it up, when I miss it knows too. I had a tough time getting it to register palm mutes, but I'm getting better at it, so it was just me being a noob.

I wish it had the option for you to pick a set difficulty. The scalable difficulty is an intriguing thought, but switching to a higher difficulty for a section the second you nail it never gives you a chance to play through a whole song and feel that accomplishment. The leveler is interesting as well, but again, if you nail a section once it levels you up, and can put you with something you aren't ready for.

I say all this, but it has motivated me to play / practice for more than three hours a day since Saturday night. I am getting noticeably better.

I just wish it let me play through a song once or twice at the current difficulty while nailing it, before letting me know, "Hey, the song is really much harder then that. Here's some more notes, noob". But even then, I feel like less of a noob than trying to practice / learn on my own.

Overall, I like it. Keep in mind I am coming from long time player of CS and CSS.

Pros:
1. Play was cool but similar to most other FPS like COD but with the vehicle options like BF (from what i've read, never played).
2. Graphics were pretty impressive even on Medium settings for my PC to play smoothly. With my sig pc on Medium it wouldn't do much over 60fps even in low action scenes.
3. Quite a few weapon (gun) choices after killing KPA or getting to a depot. Ammo can be limited though.
4. Story line is good in my opinion.
5. Vehicle/alternate weapon choices are cool and fairly easy to control. Helicopter takes a little getting used to in multiplayer as it isn't the same as single.
6. AI is not half bad. Just when you think you cleared an area, there would be KPA, or they would find a way to come from behind.
7. Worth 7.50, not so sure about the 30 they still want when not on sale.

Cons:
1. It is quite directed and there isn't any free roam in campaign mode. It is very closed off to exploring maps.
2. The biggest thing I didn't like was how short campaign was. It was definitely made for multiplayer.
3. My PC struggled at points even on medium settings. My PC isn't new by any means though. Maybe I just need a reinstall?..
4. Campaign is really short.
5. Normal seems a little too easy. I wouldn't call myself the best FPS player, but I think I am decent. I was able to "walk" through most of it.
6. Hard was pretty hard in certain chapters where I had to restart the scene 3-6times to complete.

Others to note:
1. Graphic Content. This isn't necessarily bad or good but something to note if kids are around... mass graves, dead bodies, blood splatter.
2. Verbal Content. Same as above. Definitely military based... F this, f that type of talk.

My kids (under 10) didn't really pay attention to the game when I played but I did where headphones (partly because the wife made me).

Bottom line:
If you can get it on sale (if not already bought), I think it was fun and if you can get enough for a lan or find a multiplayer near you populated, it would be worth checking out.

Maybe/Hopefully they will lower the price and turn it into episodes (or more chapters) like Half Life did. The way they ended it was crappy imo.

Hope that wasn't too much.

Finished playing Trine 2 with my brother today. Slightly disappointed with the ending, it felt so easy for a final boss/levelm especially compared to Trine. I remember it took us a good number of tries to do the final level. I also missed picking up items opposed to reading scrolls from chests...it just felt so much more exciting to open a chest and finding an item I guess lol. I can't really comment on the game length of Trine 2 v Trine cause I played on offline mode and it didn't track time but it did feel a little longer. The graphics are definitely still beautiful and they added a few new environments but gameplay wise, I think I enjoyed the first Trine a lot more. I don't know if it's how they designed the game or just how my brother and I played, but it felt like we used the wizard 90% of the time to levitate each other across obstacles whereas in Trine the wizard was used more for actually creating boxes/planks/triangles to navigate through the game (if that makes sense). Overall, Trine 2 is fun, but I don't see myself replaying it like I did with Trine and probably wouldn't recommend buying it for $15.

I beat Tiny Bang Story a few days ago. Really good, although quite easy, game. I would recommend it to anyone trying to get a child or SO into gaming, especially point-and-click adventure games.

I typically just play the same games I know and love for forever, which is why I still play TF2, L4D2 and others often even though there are plenty of newer games out.

But at the same time I need to work through my Steam library. I have . . . let's see here . . . 155 games and I've beaten maybe 20 of them. Some I will never beat. I got them in bundles of cheap stuff and they are just not fun. Others I got bored and will probably never finish either. But there are a bunch that I've just never played even. I'm thinking I should start up a gaming podcast of sorts where I help other poor gamers like me (oh the irony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UorDzCJ4cNI) in that statement) by making videos whenever there's a good sale or when there's a Humble Bundle, as well as reviewing games and free games, and old games, and giving tips on how to get good deals on computer parts.

For now though, I'm playing NightSky and it's proving to be pretty good, but doesn't hold my attention for long.

What irritated me most about that game was that you could make a mistake in your upgrade tree early and it really screws you later. Same with money. Since it carries from one mission to the next you can do really well early and use it later when you really need it. But without it the game is nearly impossible. I think I need to restart.

billygoat333
01-18-2012, 08:03 PM
I had to restart for that very same reason. If you don't manage your money well, it screws you over later on. I wish on the boss levels you could use two upgrades on the tech tree. would make life a bit easier.

Just started Duke Nukem as well. Kind of a flashback to the originals (the only shareware games I ever paid for outright).

I also tried to start Rage, but 95% of the textures are blue so it is not playable on my system. I spent about 6 hours trying several different fixes, but nothing works. I just got Nuclear Dawn and love it. It's pretty fun and the games can go for a long time. The only thing I hate about it is that there's only so much you can do as one person, so you can go and kill lots of people on one side of the map and recap a bunch of points, but then you're stuck as one class, so you can't also destroy all the buildings on that side of the map, and while I'm doing that it seems that the rest of my team can't keep a handle on the other side of the map.

Really the biggest weakness of the game is that a crappy commander will really kill your team, no matter how good they are as FPS players.

Still, it's so fun to play.

I played Super Monday Combat (free to play) up to level 20.

The Good: It's pretty fun. It's a little hard to figure out at first, and the tutorial level isn't that great, but once you start to get the hang of it it's really quite fun to play and even at a relatively low level I was doing quite well on my teams. It essentially is . . . Dota played from a 3rd person perspective view, but not quite. It's a tower defense with heroes that can level. The concept is nice and it's much easier to understand than Monday Night Combat is. MNC is difficult. I get online and will die a million times, even when I'm trying to be careful and play smart. People can just come in and kill you really easily and you never see it coming and have no time to react or escape. Super MNC is a real step forward from its predecessor as far as gameplay and mechanics are concerned.

The bad: There's something I really hate about most free-to-play games, and it's particularly bad in Super MNC. Let's say that I like the game, and want to give the developers money so that I can have access to all the game's content. Well, that's going to cost me $160. Since when has any game ever been worth $160? It's completely insane. It's one of those things that really disenfranchises the people who are probably the biggest fans of gaming and games. I would happily pay $30 for everything in game, but wouldn't be surprised or angry if they were asking $50, which is the cost of most modern games. But instead they make it too expensive for a person to actually buy the game. It's an irritating trend and I see it dying soon. Too many companies are going to jump on the bandwagon and go broke from it.

But some were saying $15 was a little overpriced for a platformer.

I love these games and wish I had known about them before. And I haven't had to really spend to much on them, ME1 I got with the remainder of a rebate gift card from my cell phone, 2 was paid for using Amazon Gift Cards earned through swagbucks.com. And I got ME3 used for $25 at the local game store. Guy even rung it up wrong, it was marked $35. I went back and showed him the mistake he was like, "I'll split the difference with you if you've got $5." I didn't have five on me so he said, "Eh just come back and be a loyal customer" Can't really beat that. Just finished getting all achievements in Costume Quest. It's a classic turn-based RPG. It's totally a Halloween game and it's pretty fun. It's short, but sweet. Any longer and I would have started getting bored.

I'm not sure what I want to do next. Maybe Psychonauts.
