View Full Version : What have you beaten recently? What are you playing?

Didn't find anything with a quick search so here goes.
I have an issue finishing games. I play a bit then get bored and move on. Here you can post the games you've just beaten, and the games you are playing, and update as you go along. You get motivated to beat the games you play, and also get to see what others are playing, and how they liked the game.
Just beaten means within the last couple weeks for your first post. Don't need a list of every game. Try to keep a similar format.
Just Beaten/Finished:
Legend Of Zelda: A Link to the Past -SNES
Professor Layton and the Curious Village -NDS
Left 4 Dead Campaigns -PC
Now Playing:
Crysis -PC
Playing but games that aren't "beatable"

I'm defining recently as since the first of the year.
Beaten:
Sid Meyer's Railroads! (was fun, maps are too small compared to the original Railroad Tycoon)
Crysis Warhead (not bad, beat in 1 day :) )
Playing:
Test Drive Unlimited (One of the best racing games to come out in the last 2 years, can't wait for Unlimited 2 to come out)
Halo 2 for Vista
Battlefield Heroes (yeah I'm a beta tester :) the game is super addicting for short 1 to 1.5 hour stints of play)

Damn, I don't think I've ever beaten a game. lol. I usually don't play SP in MP games and I don't buy SP only games.
I did go through Rainbow Six Vegas 2 a several times but all in co-op. I never reached the highest level though. Then I reformatted and forgot to backup my stats.
I'm lvl 21 in Hawx right now though with only 6 missions to go but there are like 250 achievements and the last 5 lvls will take months to get because they are a HUGE step up from the other level's point leveling steps.
EDIT: I lied. Need For Speed Underground 2 and Carbon.
BTW, interesting thread idea. +rep

Haven't beaten anything recently. The last thing was probably Crysis (the original) and that was a few months ago, anyway. I've got a thing for games with nonlinear gameplay.
Yeah, the first half of Crysis was good. The second half was too weird even for me.

I thought the aliens in Crysis were pretty fun. The Koreans actually got kind of boring after a little while. They really need more variation in the guns in that game though... and a CoOp feature.

Battlefield: Bad Company
Thoughts:
Good game. I enjoyed it. I really liked the destructible environments. Kinda felt like the game showed you all its cards quite early though. The final battle would have felt more rewarding had it not happened earlier in the game.
Now Playing:
Trying to decide. C&C: Red Alert 3 looks interesting, but I'm not a RTS type gamer, but then again perhaps a new genre would be entertaining. Maybe go back and play STALKER as I never got very far into it. Hmmm... not really sure.
Anyone any ideas what to play through next? I've got but yet to play through:
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
STALKER: SOC
C&C: RA3
Final Fantasy 12
Hmmm... Maybe Prince of Persia for 360. Just realized I can borrow that from my family.
xRyokenx
03-28-2009, 11:26 PM
@NightrainSrt4: Don't waste your time on RA3... if anything pick up an older C&C game (preferably one from before RA2). STALKER is a cool game, just has a really slow start. I also tried the Lost Planet demo and it was pretty awful, as well.

I just played through the HL2 series again. I did it really fast this time. The Episodes are so much better when you do it this way. I can't wait for Episode 3. I've also played COD 4 and World at War.
I'm playing Bioshock for the first time, and Star Wars: Empire at War (which totally sucks). I've never played a RTS that's compared to Dune 2000, which is a remake of Dune II, which was the original RTS.
Speaking of RTS games, you guys should look at this: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/03/27/epochal-achron-meta-time-strategy/

beat in the last 2 months:
Crysis (hard difficulty)
Crysis warhead (hard difficulty)
Far Cry 2 (medium difficulty, wont beat it again... way too much driving)
Call of Duty 4 (hard difficulty, and then with cheats enabled)
Call of Duty: WAW (medium, which was way too easy. Game is short)
I was 75% done grid, when my savegame went sour for somereason. Not sure if i want to restart it yet or not.
Thinking of putting my Ghost recon:advanced warfighter back on again, and finishing that. its been a good year since i played that.
Looking for a new game to get now.
Anyone heard anything on

Want to play through F.E.A.R 2 but, I hate the scary parts to it(i'm a bit of wimp that way). The slow mo makes it almost worth it though.

Just Finished:
Prince of Persia -360
Thoughts: Scenery and graphic design was great, but overall the game lacked substance. Repetitive. Hunting light seeds just to progress made me feel like I was young again playing Jak & Daxter or something, and not in a good way, just that type of platformer. Wished the story was deeper, but that's why they toss the epilogue into DLC so you have to pay for it, no thanks.
I honestly only finished it because I created this thread and am trying to actually complete a game before moving on to something else. Else everything I have will have 1 hour played and nothing more.

Wow.
So, someone gets plus repped by jbdnsn for making a joke about screwing on a motherboard, but I get negative repped for making that joke?
Somebody has in their signature "if you experience an erection for more than four hours, keep it the hell away from me!" and no one says anything about that??????
What the heck, seems a little inconsistent to me. Is this is the kind of place where it's not what the joke was, instead who made it?

I wouldn't worry about it. Make a few good contributions, or some nice work on your mod and it will go away quickly. The sex/personal joke stuff seems to be more tolerated in Chatterbox, so I'd prob try and keep it in that area so it doesn't matter as much if it disrupts the thread.
But please try and keep the thread on track. I'd rather not be the only one in two months posting my progress lmfao.
I still can't decide where to go next in my gaming completion kick lol. I never finished Mass Effect so maybe that's an option, but I'm out of AA batteries lol. I really need to grab some rechargeables.

No problem! I've borrowed this guy's (http://www.atdoflynchburg.com/sc4/myregion.htm) Central Virginia terrain; rolling hills and a steeply-sloped river are keeping things interesting. He's correct in suggesting MicroDEM if you're looking at a certain area rather than drawing your own terrain.

I LOVE Flight Sim X! I have not yet made it through all of the missions but I have done most of them. I had the privilege of playing the previous Microsoft Flight Sim on Crimson Sky's Project Nighthawk (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/?q=node/326) with a triple monitor arrangement out at the Maker's Faire in San Mateo last year and that was the coolest flight sim experience I've had. If you have the cash and are really into realistic flight sims, triple display is the way to go for sure.

Not to get too far off topic, but any of you Sim City 4 fans out there, what are your thoughts on Cities XL by Monte Cristo? Looks to me that it'll be a proper successor to SC4 (even thought it is not by Maxis or EA).
FuzzyPlushroom
04-04-2009, 10:13 PM
Well, it seems like (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=383&threadid=106359&enterthread=y) it could fill the void left after SC Societies crashed and burned. City Life, Monte Cristo's previous attempt, was more like Societies - a good idea, but not so much aimed at SimCity fans. (Actually, I'll be honest: City Life drove me nuts.) Hopefully XL will change that; what I've seen is promising.
Oh, and thanks for the +rep, guys! I'm a longtime member of SC3000/SC4EVER as well, but there are still things I go back and look up.

Episode 1 was pretty good, but Episode 2 completely destroys it. The new cinematic physics engine is AWESOME in the like 3 times it's really used. I let the striders destroy the buildings the first time through cuz it was so cool to watch.
Just beat CoD5 on hard though, now I'm trying it again on veteran. Anyone else absolutely hate the checkpoint system they use? Makes the game so much harder, and destroys the sense of accomplishment when you beat one hard segment, only to die because you bask in the victory for a second.

God of War 2
Was a decent game. Felt there were a lot of stupid puzzles, well, less puzzles and more if you don't notice the little statue blending into the rest of the scene in SD then you wander around for 20 minutes figuring it out.
Really wish there were more of the huge boss fights and not the little ones. I like the huge battles, like the Colossus and the Kraken.
And finally, ugghhh, they make you get totally into the ending and then BAMMM, wait for GoW3 and buy a damn PS3. Don't have a ps3 but ugghhh I want the ending. Have to google the story when it comes out.

I've just finished Prototype.
Its fantastically fun to play through, but the storyline kinda goes downhill throughout, which is a shame, as it starts out very promising.
Very weak ending in my opinion, if the gameplay hadnt been so much fun, i would have been pretty unimpressed with it.
Just trying to decide what to play through next, I'm tempted by Mass Effect again, as the story is so nicely done.
Or possibly beyond good and evil, as i picked it up in a charity shop a year or so back for a couple of quid and havent got round to playing it yet.

I was just about to beat Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes [XBOX1] when the xbox magically lost my save games, but only the recent ones. It must have had short term memory loss as my save games from 2003 are still there, just not the ones from the last few days.
Frustrating, because I still have that old habit many of us had from the Playstation 1 days where you save in multiple blocks for fear of losing a save game to a corrupt file.
So XBOX lost freaking 3 saves, but only recent ones. Ughh. Was on the last couple areas about to beat it.

I've been playing a mod for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. called Priboi Story. It's pretty much a total conversion that adds a good number of guns, removed mutants, as well as a new story for it. It's pretty fun.

Just Beat:
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
It was just as glorious as I remembered it. The part with the dwellers was still the lower part of the game, just like before, but I remembered where to go which made it go by much quicker. The graphic update was nice and welcomed, but honestly didn't make it feel all that much different as the old graphics hold up well as it is. But, there was a lot of mesh issues on the characters heads and faces, with some having jutting polygons and such. Also, about a third/fourth of the characters had huge bugeye eyeballs popping out of their heads. Overall, a great game, and very overlooked during its original release.

I found it enjoyable. Quite refreshing compared to a lot of games out recently. Few parts were a little frustrating to get through, but only took a couple tries. Loved the colors. The city seemed sterile and creepy, but I really did love the white with strong colors.
Before that I beat Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. Thought I mentioned it, but perhaps I didn't. Good game. Another I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the change in setting.

i didn't want to pay full price so i was going wait for a price drop, but future shop had it for 29.99 so i grabbed it. for that price point it's a great game.
there is multiplayer but no co-op(i take that to mean 2 players playing the game story).
i haven't tried the multiplayer part of it as i have no interest but the single player has been really good so far.
there are a bunch of unlockables for the guns which is what makes me want to play it to the end. i really like it when games do that.
i would give it 9/10, they could have had more weapons i think. (i think there is 8 total)

I've heard about them, but haven't had the time to watch them yet.
Supposedly, they're redoing some things, graphics wise, to make better use of DX11 (I'll be upgrading to a HD5850 or HD5870 in March after the obscenely high prices drop a bit).
On my run through, I had about 50% or more on all of the "extra memories" (flags and killing Templars). In some places I don't know where they could hide the rest of the flags.

CJ- You will LOVE it, it's a miraculous game. If for no other reason the landscapes are simply mesmerizing. They put so much into putting together breathtaking scenery and it comes across as perfect in my eyes. The game itself is pretty fun too, but with some repetition which sucks a tad, still doesn't ruin the game though. I just beat Assassin's Creed II on the PS3, but I'd like to see the game on my PC now that I actually have something that will run DX11, so I'll likely end up buying another copy of the same damned game.

It wasn't hard at all, just a bit grindy in places. Sometimes you were too high to do anything, and others too low. Most of the game was just a tank and spank though, so I doubt I will be playing SO2 any time soon, especially as the battle system is the same I guess.

Been playing this game as well. Sat unopened on my shelf for a couple of months and I completely forgot about it. I like the game. It is a little addictive too. I love going into the towns, planting an IED and then popping a few guys so the rest will come after you, then BLAM! flying bodies. Cleared out the entire town with only a few shots...
Too bad the guys guarding the leaders houses keep respawning...
Funny thing is, even though I have bought most of the weapons I still only use a few of them. I got in too much trouble using the flamethrower...

If you play it right you should be able to finish a whole campaign in less than an hour, under two on expert.
Each campaign is its own story, loosely tied together with fan speculation and a few of the lines the characters say. They are meant to be stand alone "movies" in a quadrilogy. I'd say the story is fleshed out about as well as most Hollywood zombie movies (which is usually little to none).
Right now I'm playing Hammerfight (http://store.steampowered.com/app/41100/), which is on sale for $5 on Steam right now. I played the beta when it was still in development and then it fell off my radar for a few years. There is something refreshingly SNES about it, but the physics of the game will make your mouse feel heavy, which is great. There is a bit of a learning curve. You will likely fail levels two or three or four or five times before finally beating it and moving on. The story can be a bit vague at times, but the gameplay is really fun, so I like it. It's a definite "go buy it now" game at $5.

I've played through it like four times now... and thanks to a save file editor, I've messed up a couple of my saves, lol. Thankfully one of them hasn't been touched yet so I'll play through it with my bro at lvl34.
Just make sure you don't try Playthrough 2 of General Knoxx at lvl 34...you will be slaughtered. Apparently Playthrough 1 is best done in the upper 20's, but Playthrough 2 the enemies start at 50/51, so if you're not at 50 yet, you will die...a lot.

Blasphemy I know, but I have yet to make it more than 20 minutes into STALKER: SOC (and I haven't played the others). Decided to give it a whole-hearted go this time. Installed Stalker Complete 2009 and went for it.
Man, is it sweet. Not sure why I didn't get into it before. I forgot that it was meant to be a bit creepy, and not just artifact scavenger hunting, so when the first cloaked mutant attacked me out of nowhere I screamed at the top of my lungs, LMFAO. The fiance thought I was dying or something.

I just beat Portal, well the standard levels anyways. AWESOME game! trying to do the advanced but they're tricky lol. I'm going to eventually go back through the regular version and go for some achievements
If you enjoyed Portal, check out Portal: Prelude (http://www.portalprelude.com/). It's an unofficial prequal to Portal, but very well done (and free!). For an idea of the difficulty of the challenges, think of the harder challenges in Portal..that's about the level of the easier challenges in Prelude.

Finished:
Batman Arkham Asylum. Pretty easy game, even on hard. Had fun playing it though.
Portal. Total of about 6 hours to finish the game on the first levels plus a few of the challenges. Not a bad game, I can see spending lots of time getting all the challenges and such.

In the middle of playing the original Mass Effect game on PC. And looooving it. Graphics look a bit dated to me, but the storyline is fantastic, and there's a lot of depth to the game that I'm enjoying. One of the main effects it's having is that I can't wait to play the next one...and recently found out there's supposed to be a third one sometime, plus a bunch of downloadable stuff for each one...
Also having fun playing Grid, although i need something other than the keyboard. Thinking about getting a wheel when I can afford it, I'm not big on gamepads, and a wheel would be fun...
Games I've bought but have yet to start (got most of these on Steam during their holiday sale):
Portal, Bioshock, Stalker Chernobyl, Dirt, Dirt 2, and a whole bunch of others I'm forgetting at the moment...

lol
I forgot about those...
I got my "fall 30000' " achievement yesterday while sitting home sick. Setup a couple of portals, jumped and walked away for 15 minutes.
I also got my Cupcake award for beating 2 of the advanced maps.
I also beat Wanted on Monday. Fun game! The whole church map I entirely forgot about curving bullets and kept getting wasted running up the steps. I didn't even remember until I had beaten the game.. DOH!
Still to finish:
Fallout 3 (keep getting bored...)
Mercenaries 2 (same thing, keep getting bored doing the same stuff)
Mirrors Edge (get frustrated on some of the jumps and I give up for a while)
Bioshock 2 (I keep forgetting to save and have to redo a bunch of stuff...)
I think I have a few others... Man i waste a lot of time gaming...

one strategy I loved using in the older Doom games was running into a room stuffed full of baddies, and trying to run between them such that they'd end up attacking each other. Go hide or keep running around, then pick off the survivors. Pretty effective technique usually. too bad newer games' AI's are better....*sigh....

Eh, "better" is debatable. I mean if you think about it how is a game with a bunch of dumb henchmen, or zombies able to never hit each other, or if they do hit each other how are they smart enough to know who hit them is on their side? I can understand some games not using the system, but some games would benefit from the classic Doom infighting system if you ask me. It can act as a very tricky way to promote ammo conservation in limited ammo type shooters, and add a new toy in the "shoot everything" games so you don't get bored.
Just my thoughts... But what do I know? I still prefer first-person games over third...
Incoming wall of text.
Recently started playing AC2 and finished last night. I enjoyed the first one, but the second one brought a lot more elements to the game.
The only real gripe I have about the game are the controls. I assume they are better optimized for a console controller. Little annoying to learn what key goes to each symbol but I got it down pretty fast. I found it most annoying when my char would just jump the wrong way or attempt to jump off a building and instead just fall and grasp the edge. Oh and the damn bars that you swing off of. I still dont know the proper way to swing off them. I usually ended up spamming space bar, then hold it until I got some kind of momentum...and eventually made the swing off. I dont think I have ever gotten so pissed at controls before.
/end rant about annoying controls
On the plus side, I really enjoyed "upgrading" my city and buying weapons/armor. The flying missions and horse carriage mission were probably my favorite. The biggest improvment of AC2 over AC1 was all the differnet ways to assassinate people. The smoke and posion knifes were a cool idea but I never used them.
Overall I really liked the game except for the controls with a keyboard/mouse.
Cliffs:
Finished AC2
Really hated the controls
Horse carriage and flying were my favorite missions
Enjoyed all the new ways to assassinate people
Found smoke and poison usless to me

I really enjoyed the beginning intro gameplay and story to AC1, but just stopped playing it once they dropped you out onto your own, where you have to ride your horse forever to some other place. The game just felt better to me when they gave you more guidance. Shame I couldn't stick with it as I got similar feelings during the story portions outside the memories as I did the first time I played HL2.

@artoo: I don't recommend Dragon Age. The graphics are good but the combat is like a massively dumbed-down version of WoW. It's a waste of money in my opinion.
Mass Effect 2 is amazing. If you liked the first one that much then you'll really enjoy the second.

No problem. I watched my brother play a lot of it and he ended up running around in circles during boss fights so his health and special abilities could recharge lol. It was pretty disappointing.
I loved Mass Effect 2, though. That game is a LOT of fun.
artoodeeto
06-05-2010, 02:26 PM
actually I had to do some running around/hiding in mass effect to let my health and abilities recharge...and it didn't bother me too much. What I found more irritating was not being able to save my game in the middle of a fight or in elevators. In fact, it took me awhile to get through the end of the Rescue Liara mission because I hadn't leveled up very far, and by the time I found out I had to face a Krogan Battlemaster at the end of it, I didn't have the savegames to go back to before I started the mission.
There's a video sequence before the battle, and it doesn't let you save the game after it, just puts you into the fight, so I had to sit through that each time. Luckily I didn't encounter any other similar situation in the game, but it was really annoying. I can't figure out why they didn't do an autosave just before the battle started...but they didn't. Eh well. Still not totally sure how I did it, I know I just barely scraped by.

06-05-2010, 06:21 PM
The fight with the battlemaster was a tough one. I think it takes everybody at least a few tries to get through that. As far as I know, ME2 doesn't have any situations like that in it.
artoodeeto
06-06-2010, 12:51 AM
Heck, even the final fight with Saren at the end of the game was easier than that #$@@$ Battlemaster LOL. took me fewer tries anyway. But then, I was also at like level 49 (is 50 the highest you can get? seems like it, I don't think I missed many opportunities for experience points)

Pro-Tip: Two Perfect Gems create a "Great Gem". It's twice as powerful as a perfect in every way. It's awesome, but hard as hell to get. Go for the three main towers instead. (The one's with the Normal Sapphire, Topaz and Diamond in the equation. They look like pointed bar's.)
Bought Supreme Commander 2 during a sale. I actually enjoyed the single player for some odd reason; I never play single player for RTS games so this was a first. Im not even really sure why I liked the game; I just did :)
Metro 2033 was on the the other day on Steam so I picked it up. Pretty awesome game with very nice graphics. Story was pretty nice, weapons looked awesome, and some cut scences were pretty cool. Reminded me of F.E.A.R. Only downside was the whole game only took me about 10 hrs to complete; but it was worth my $25
Currently I am playing a little Mirror's Edge but not too involved in the game. Hoping for Just Cause 2 sale on Steam soon.

Been busy, but have been spending what free time I do have playing MW2 with friends on 360. I fixed up a broken 360 and to my surprise it wasn't banned. We will see if it has been flagged, but for the last few weeks it's been working well.
I enjoy the game far more on 360 than pc. Haven't had to deal with cheats, but the game is still just as campy on 360 as it is on pc. People whine if you toob them, even if they have been camping the same room all game, and half their team is spamming toobs. Idk, I hate both communities, but it is more bearable on 360 for whatever reason. Maybe it's the file review / complaint thing, I don't know.

Ginormo Sword. Google it.
Unfortunately the community for MW2 seems to be getting even worse. My friends and I probably encounter at least one hacker in 90% of the games we join. Unlike a lot of people I really enjoy the game, especially with friends, but it is getting harder and harder to actually have fun with so many hackers and laggy servers (always seems like the worst host possible gets chosen)
I finally got around to playing Mirror's Edge last weekend, and I think I'm in love. :D I've had it for a while (picked it up on a Steam sale for something like $4-5), but never got around to playing it...until now.. I think this is the most fun I've had in a game for a long, long time. It's also very refreshing to play a fun, well-designed game, with a well-thought-out plot, that doesn't have combat comprise 90+% of the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good FPS as much as the next guy, but it's nice to see something different. And apparently we're going to get another one! My time has been split up between several things over the last few weeks/months.
Off and On:
TF2
360 MW2
League of Legends
Campaign:
Dirt 2 w/ my wheel. Much better experience this time with a wheel compared to the controller. Only play single player as I had way too much first corner frustrations with Forza/Forza2. Racing games are now single player only for me. Don't need the rage, lol.
Dragon Age: Origins. Really enjoying this game a lot. It takes a lot of what I loved about Neverwinter Nights and streamlined it in a good way ( at least for me. I'm not super hardcore ).
Have to finish Red Dead Redemption campaign sometime along.

Interesting game. Kept me playing all the way through (campaign, that is). Ending seemed a bit anti-climactic. Gave me my fix for arcade flight games though. Haven't tried the multiplayer, if anyone even still plays it.

I don't play enough for the slight deviations the director sends the horde goes right above me. It always seems like the same thing, and just a bit monotonous after a while. I wish the campaign had more depth, but then if you do that you can't necessarily use the levels directly in multiplayer.
Guess part of me is just jonesing for a new Valve single player focused game. They are generally the only games I will go out of my way to pay full price for on day one.
